Fairlight Questions

PostTue May 08, 2018 10:56 pm

Hey guys,

First post here, so hi!

I have been intrigued by the incorporation of Fairlight into Resolve since it was announced in v14, and have just now gotten around to testing the new v15 beta out. I am vaguely familiar with Resolve in general from running a post-house in NYC, but obviously have never used it for audio work before, only color grading.

Has anyone been using this on projects yet? It seems very powerful, once you get the hang of how the audio editing works (coming from a Pro Tools background). The eq's, dynamics, and ResolveFX all sound VERY good to my ears, I just have some questions workflow-wise.

1) Up/Downmixing. How can this be handled properly? I use Nugen Audio's Halo Upmix religiously. If i'm understanding correctly, the source channel needs to match the channel count that I'm upmixing to, right? say, stereo background ambience upmixed to 5.1; I would need to change the stereo track containing the file to a 5.1 track and THEN insert Halo Upmix, right? and for downmixing, the submix AUX channels would need to send to another 5.1 Aux, have a dowmixer applied and then sent to a stereo AUX?

2) Automation trimming. is there a way to key in automation on tracks without having to automation-enable the track and move the fader?

3) Binaural monitoring. Some projects I've worked with have been for headphone binaural sound. I have binaural down-mix plugins for this, but when I tried adding one of these to my master track, Resolve crashed. Not sure if this is a bug, or if the tracks are incapable of routing 5.1 to stereo.

4) Video Scroller size. I LOVE this thing, however it is way too small on a 4k monitor to actually see details. Lining up foley on this thing would be GREAT... if i could see it.

5) Accelerator card. Does anyone have any info on this thing? I have audio ins/outs covered by a separate audio interface, does this thing just do the audio DSP processing on the card instead of CPU? If so, is that track FX only, or will it also process the EQ/plugins placed directly on the audio files themselves through the clip attributes?

I'm sure I'll have a million more questions, but these are what are on my mind as of now. I'm excited to dig into this and see if it could actually be a viable replacement for Pro Tools.
