Slow Render Performance

PostWed May 16, 2018 5:25 pm

Hello from Germany,

first of all sorry for my bad english but this seems to be my last chance to rescue the performance of my new editing Computer.

I bought a brandnew computer a few month ago (HP workstation z840, 2x Intel Xeon 2660v4 2,0 GHz, 128 GB RAM, NVidia P5000, 4x Turbo Drive SSD Win 10) to get an really fast and solid editing system which fullfills the requirements of Davinci Resolve a lot more than necessary.

The result is that this system is slower with the renderspeed than an 400€ notebook. For weeks I write with HP, Microsoft Support and Blackmagic as well and nobody can help.

I´ve made an testproject to compare the renderspeed with different settings. This testproject is an 10 sec Title animation with an plugin Titler 6 pro from NewBlue FX and my system needs 16,30min !!!! to render 10 sec!!! in least full HD quality. Not even 1 Frame per second. You cant scroll through the timeline, it takes about 3 second untill an reaction happens. I´ve tested about 7 different codecs, and a variety of different resolutions, changing the general setting (Open CL, CUDA etc. only makes differences of about 6 seconds up or down.

What you can see at the cernel Monitor is that 1 Cernel is running for his life an 27 are nearly sleeping.... CPU Power 3%!!! and GPU Power 0,7%!!!! of max Power. I´ve checked this behavior as well only with Resolve effects without any Plugins using...same effect...slow slow slow...

Hardware Motherboard and CPU´s are exchanged allready, but for me it was clear that this behavior is not an hardware problem, because stresstest programs for CPU and GPU made absolutely best results.

I´ve deinstalled virus scanner as well, all driver are the newest and still 27 cernels and the GPU are sleeping.
I think this is a win 10 problem. I think if all works fine the CPU and GPU usage should be 90-95%?! And then the system could fly. Normaly this test title should playback almost in realtime....

I´m happy for every comment...

Hi, lets start by not using third party plugins to verify speed.

Make a new UHD project. In the edit page select a generator, say color bars, and drag it to the timeline.
Make it 60 seconds long. Now right click and make the bars a compound clip.
Now on the deliver page set your codec, file name, select the SSD for the render location and add to the render queue.
My old iMac renders this twice real time.'

Once that works, next replace the bars with a media pool clip from a good codec. ProRes or DNxHD or DPX.

Next try codecs that are more challenging to use because they have lots of complex compression, like h.264.

Let us know the results.

I can confirm that the New Blue plug-ins are slow. I don't have this problem with Resolve's own plug-ins or those from BorisFX or Sapphire. (I'm not a big fan of the New Blue plug-ins in general.)

I would suggest to the o.p. that they try the new Fusion titling in Resolve 15 and see how that works. It should fly pretty fast on a beefy z840 system.
