Adding a vertex to a mask that has key frames breaks the key frame interpolation - mask just jumps at the new key frame. Then it gets stuck in some weird state, even if you delete the key frame that has the additional vertex it still jumps and you have to delete everything and start over.
some other software allows you to add a vertex after having keyframes with some caveats (AE), but I understand how it could be problematic - at least throw up a warning - its too easy to add another point when your trying to just grab a point to reposition it.
