Switching from optimized to raw clips when editing multicam

PostThu May 26, 2016 10:42 pm

I'm using Resolve Studio 12.5 b3 and I've just decided to try and start doing my cuts in Resolve instead of Premiere. When I create a multicam clip and generate optimized media (I'm working with BMCC 2.5k and BMPCC footage) things work great. My footage plays smoothly and I'm able to edit just fine. My issue is when trying to switch back to my raw clips for the purpose of coloring. I click on Playback and uncheck "Use Optimized Media" which should get me back to my raw clips, right? Well, on the color page I have access to the raw controls but they don't do anything. The image doesn't change, my scopes don't move... Nothing. Is this a 12.5 beta bug? Or am I doing something wrong? All other color controls work just fine, just not the raw controls which makes me thing that I'm never switching back to my raw clips or something.

EDIT: I should add, sometime I don't even have access to the raw controls. And I just checked on 12.3 and have the same behavior.

Am I really the only one with this problem? Or does nobody else edit multicam clips using optimized media?

In the edit page, did you 'Open in Timeline' the multicam clip so you see all the originals?
When you do, the color page will show the source clips for grading, not the single multicam clip.

You can also double click under the color page thumbs to see what codec, version and file name are related to each clip.. make sure you see a raw codec there before the palette is active.

Yes, if I click Open in Timeline from the edit page, I indeed see the original clips. If I go to the color page there, I have all the raw controls as I would expect. Everything works great. Should I do my raw corrections here? Why don't I have this same access from the multicam timeline?

When I double-click under the color page thumbs from the opened timeline, it says DNG as I would expect. When I double-click under the thumbs on the color page in the Multicam timeline, it just gives me the name of the multicam timeline.

Until you open in timeline, the clips are considered part of a single multicam which is a virtual clip. So open in timeline is the correct process.

Got it, I think. I should state that I created a new timeline and brought my multicast clip into that for editing, which is the correct workflow right? So, I'm in a proper timeline but still don't have access to the raw controls. This is by design? That seems a little weird to me.

Right click on the multicam clip in the edit timeline and select "open in timeline".

This turns the special multicam clip into individual clips. You can now grade them individually.
Use the breadcrumbs at bottom left of edit timeline to collapse the multiple clips back into the multicam.

Full details in the manual. Or search the help menu.

Not a problem. I can definitely do that. To be fair, I scoured the manual and couldn't find anything that suggested that workflow. Thanks for you help.

Chapter 16, pg 416,417 in the draft manual. Once you try it you will see how easy it is to bounce back and forwards.

Is the draft manual different than the manual that comes with the 12.5 beta? Pages 416-417 in my 12.5 manual only show about adding markers to the timeline.

The more I think about it, the more I see how easy it would be to make my raw adjustments to the large clips in the timeline. I can dig it.
