mixing interlaced and progressive footage

PostMon Jun 25, 2018 6:44 pm

For years I've accepted the rule that the one thing you can't do in a non-linear editing system is mix progressive and interlaced footage, but I'm thinking that's no longer true - with Resolve 14 at least.

A while back I "accidentally' editied some interlaced footage into a prgressive project. Wow, what had just happened? And recently to remove motion blur I had to de-interlace some shots from a moving car to edit them into an interlaced project. But don't de-interlaced shots effectively become progressive?

So seems from this experience that in Resolve 14 one can mix interlaced and progressive footage in the same project. Can this be true? If so great news. Can't think of any other explanation for the instances I've described above.

Can someone confirm?

Thanks.

Unless you deliver interlaced I would always deinterlace the footage outside Resolve, I think that is the best and safest workflow.

Some things may work great in Resolve but for instance resizing interlaced footage on a progressive timeline is a problem.

Here is an example of a test comparing resizing interlaced footage on a progressive Resolve timeline versus external deinterlacing, watch the video in full screen:

Thanks for the reply.

It seems deinterlacing is only available in Resolve in the paid for version. In my case I was able to de-interlace in Final Cut and import that. Even so I know there are better deinterlacing programs than Final Cut's but I'm not worried about that at this stage of the edit. As for resizing I can't see myself needing to do that. As for deinterlacing the whole interlaced project, again I'll worry about what we do about that once the editing is finished.

So if I understand you correctly Resolve can work with a mix of progressive and interlaced footage (which in reality might only mean including out of necessity either some progressive footage into an interlaced project or vice versa). If so that's great news.

Thanks again.
