laptop for 2k raw - xps or dell gtx1060

PostTue Jun 26, 2018 9:13 pm

Hey guys I am a videographer and basic editor willing to jump into Resolve. I have done color grading courses back in 2014 when davinci resolve was 10 but I didn't have the budget for a good enough GPU. So far I've been using proxies for editing and someone else grades it.

So, now I am after a laptop ( I need mobility) that can handle 2k raw cinemaDNG footage ( digital Bolex) . The timeline can be set 1/2 or 1/4. I will be happy with 3 to 4 nodes, but of course I want to explore full potential of the camera's color depth or as much as I can. So now I have come to scenarios*

either the new dell xps 9570 - I78700 - 4gb gtx1050timaxQ - 16gb RAM - good screen
or the dell G3 - with the same CPU but better GPU: 6gb 1060maxq - 16gb RAM - terrible screen - external monitor when I can.

I will also use 4k footage from a panasonic on a premiere pro 1080p timeline and eventually davinci. I actually don't know what requires more gnu on davinci, 4k h264 8bit or 2k raw cinema dng 14bit?

I have read people on this forum using 4k - and not raw2 - on the older dell xps (gtx1050) - if 4k demands more than raw2k than I have the answer I need.

So, do you think I should sacrifice the good screen for 2gb gpu plus and more weight on my back or the gtx1050ti is fine for more basic work?

if you think neither will be sufficient, I would buy one of them anyway and use proxies - but than maybe I would buy something even cheaper. So please let me know about laptop experiences with this newer laptops, I would highly appreciate!

*I came to dell because I'm based outside of the US where dell gives me warranty for products that they don't sell here.

Thanks! Tomás

Hi

I'm not convinced a laptop is ideal for Resolve. And in the DaVinci Resolve 15 Configuration Guide:

http://documents.blackmagicdesign.com/D ... _Guide.pdf

On the lower parts of page 19 is written about laptops. Under both HP and DELL is written, but it is valid for all laptops: 'While performance for many applications and UHD resolutions will be limited'.

But You write that you will buy one of your suggested Dell's laptops anyway. So I can only recommend you to read this:

I like that you choose the new i7 8700H CPU for Resolve. It share the the same FCBGA1440 socket as the previous 4 core Intel Core i7 7700HQ. So actually the manufacturers can just swap the CPU and a few others components and sell the previous model of their laptop as a new 6 core model. But they have one problem. The 6 core CPU's produce much more heat. so they must rethink the heat dissipation. And I am sorry to tell you that they don't.

I don't know why you chose the Dell G3. Here is a link to a G5. It is sold by Amazon in France for 1399 Euro:

https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B07D6K19X5?m=A ... Zkg51qt7Nw

But I also found this customer review:

https://www.amazon.com/Dell-G5587-7866B ... ll_reviews

I wonder if it is ready for sale yet. But I also included the links to show you what laptops and prices to expect in the coming months.

I read that there is a shortage of Dell XPS 15 9570's along reviewers. Here is a link to the first completed review I ever read:

https://www.ultrabookreview.com/20435-x ... view-live/

I am disappointed. The write speed of the SSD is particularly slow.
The the graphics performance of the Thunderbolt 3 is significantly slower than his XPS 13 9370.
And at 5000 RPM, the fans are quite noisy.

I am sure the i7 8700H is the way to go. But it is a new CPU and the manufacturers must learn how to handle the extra heat. Personally I don't think it can be done very well in a very small laptop. You must look at least into a medium or large sized laptop to get rid of the heat.

The MSI GE has much better cooling than the MSI GP Series. And the only resenable review you can read of a laptop with a i7 8700H and a GTX 1060 6 GB is this. The price in France is around 1500 Euro with a GTX 1060 6 GB:

https://www.notebookcheck.net/MSI-GE73- ... 006.0.html

But I don't know it. So I can't recommend it. But I be live that is the way to look. Or may be something similar.

Regards Carsten.
