I see some other bugs about the slip/slide icon not updating, but this id different. When I set the trim mode to slide, the media slips instead.. the clip stays in the same position as the media slips though it.

It doesn't work that way. If you use the mouse, positioning over the upper portion of the clip slips it and over the lower portion slides it. You'll see different trim icons for the two. This choice overrides any other indicator.
If you select a clip and use the keyboard to slip or slide, then the indicator will correctly determine which action occurs.
