PC stops rendering video based on photos

PostTue Jul 24, 2018 5:04 pm

Hi all,

I'm pretty new to Davinci Resolve (15 beta 6) but have used it for some simple video editing with success.

Now I have the following problem: When I try to deliver a video, DR stops rendering after approx 60-80%.

My video consists of 17280 still images (4000 x 3000 pixels) - one picture each 5th seconds for 24 hrs. On top of that I have added 24 texts: 00:00 to 23:00.

I have tried delivering to "Youtube" using .mp4 format in different resolutions, but they all stops between 60-80% of rendering. I get no error messages - it just stops. I have had it running for 8 hrs AFTER it seemed to stop to see if it was just slow - but no - it had stopped.

I have a pc with an i5-4440 CPU @ 3.1 GHz with 16 GB RAM running on Windows 10 Pro 64 bit version.
My GPU is a GeForce GTX 960 with 12 GB ram.

Please ask me what kind of details you need from me, if you are willing to help me out :-).

Rgds

Could it be your hard drive filled up?
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

AFAIK that GPU has a maximum of 4GB VRAM, not 12, and often comes with only 2.
What is your timeline resolution?
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

No, this data drive still has 460 gb left. Thanks for asking.

Ah... you are probably right! The System Information provided by Nvidia says: "Total available graphics memory: 10209 mb" and "Dedicated video memory: 2048 MB GDDR 5".

My timeline resolution is: 1080 x 1080 @ 24 FPS.

Try dropping your render speed a notch or two. That works for me when renders stop.

Have finally had the time to try. Still not working. Apart from "Maximum" I've tried 100, 75 and 50.

What I see in the Task Manager is that it has opened 9 Console Window Host, 1 DaVinciPanelDeamon.exe, 8 DPDecoder.exe, 1 FustionScript services for Fusion and 1 DaVinci Resolve. The last one does not respond - but uses about 30% of my memory and 9 gb of ram (approx 75%).

When it hangs it uses 0% of the GPU.

Another workaround:
- check Playback -> Render Cache -> Smart
- wait for caching (start Play from the start to the end, wait for the blue line to appear)
- on Delivery page, Video tab, Advanced Settings — check Use render cached images

Result (probably) — very fast (faster then realtime) rendering without stops.

Your GPU might be choking on those stills.

Will give it a go. Sounds like a good solution to me!

Will revert with result if it works or not.

Okay, I ended up exporting the final movie a little different. It's not optimal but it works.

Step 1:
I rendered two movies, 6 minutes each. Fun fact: I had to export them one at a time. If I exported them in the same "batch", movie number 2 failed.
Step 2:
I created a new project, imported the two previous movies and re-rendered them. It worked!

It's not optimal in several ways: It seems like an unnecessary step to make two temporary files. And in my example, I exported as MP4 (which has compression) both during the export of temporary files and the final file. So there is a loss of quality. For this movie it is okay, but if I have to do it again, I will see if I can find a lossless export for the temporary files.

Thank you for all your answers and suggestions!
