Differences between free and Studio

PostSat Nov 11, 2017 3:24 am

I've searched google, and for the life of me, I cannot find a definitive list of the differences between Resolve 14 Studio and free.

I currently use free, and I love it. I'm leaning towards buying Studio, but a full list of reasons would be great.

Scrolling way down on the Resolve page, it says this:

"...multi user collaboration features that let editors, colorists, and sound engineers all work together on the same project at the same time, plus 3D tools, dozens of Resolve FX and more"

A list of FX and what 3d tools are would be great. Also, I hear it supports the Panasonic GH5 10bit 4:2:2 without transcoding. I'd almost pay $300 just for that.

Thanks!

I don't have a full list but the main reason I bought it was noise reduction. I use a Blackmagic Micro Cinema camera and shoot in raw. My camera does not have built in noise reduction, so my footage tends to be noisy. After applying noise reduction to my shots it's night and day.

Blackmagic used to have a side by side features comparison but I can't find it.

You can go through the OpenFX list and instance each and every one. The ones which are only available in Studio will display with a watermark on it.

One tiny difference... :o insert sarcasm.

Free does NOT play h.265 audio on Windows 10 Example Go Pro Hero 6 will not play audio on free version.

Re: Differences between free and Studio

I see what's happened. In Resolve 14 and earlier, the website had a comprehensive list of features in DaVinci Resolve - and had a side-by-side chart of the differences between Resolve and Resolve Studio.

Their website has switched over to Resolve 15 and that list is now a PDF (on the Support page). But that PDF is ONLY Resolve 15.

Since some OpenFX that were Studio-only in 14 are now part of the Free version of Resolve 15 - the list of OpenFX filters won't fully reflect what's a paid filter in R14.

You can find the current PDF here (direct link to PDF):
https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/manuals/DaVinciResolve/DaVinci_Resolve_15_Feature_Comparison.pdf

But it's rather easy to figure out on your own. Just go down the list of OFX and apply them to a node. The paid ones will instantly appear with a watermark :-)

Yes. Studio is worse if your hardware is not up to it and you use the advanced features ;-)

Both free and studio versions go through the same QA process.
What will affect you with both is the hardware you are issuing, OS version, the source clips you use and then the complexity of the grade/effect applied.

You also get the satisfaction of supporting a company that's on the cutting edge and improving their software by leaps and bounds. I definitely use many of the "Studio" features but even if I only used a few I would not mind considering I just received a free major version upgrade from 14 to 15 which is almost unheard of in the industry.
