Feature Request: Resolve Live / LUT box support

PostWed Feb 21, 2018 6:59 pm

Hello,

I'm working as a DIT in Austria and I'm searching for a good live grading solution other than Livegrade.

There are some apps for live grading out there: Pomforts Livegrade (just CDL), Filmlight's Prelight (has everything I want, but is optimised for a workflow with Daylight/Baselight and Daylight doesn't work with not native GPUs), Colorfront On set live (very expensive), ...

My point is:
Please BM make a consequent implementation (or better a seperate app) of the Live grading capability!
Follow Filmlight's example and create a tool which integrates seamlessly with DaVinci Resolve.

Here is a list of some of the requirements:
* Control / Upload to different LUT boxes from various manufactorers
* Full live grading control including shapes and others
* Translate the part of the primary/secondary (no shapes etc) part of the grading into a 3D LUT
* Transport all grading information from set to grading/transcoding station (like Baselight's BLG files)
* Organize stills into scenes/shooting days and stay organized even for few month long projects
* Make entries (scene/take/notes etc.) to clips which are also stored as metadata
* Minimize live signal delay/lag
etc ....

Please listen and make something new, I'm shure there is enough demand for that from DITs worldwide.
Most of the people don't use the Resolve Live feature because of the lack of practical functionality for on set purpose!

Thanks for listening,
Gerhard

I absolutely agree. BM needs to make this a reality. Davinci is such a versatile program yet it's absolutely ignored the on-set Live Coloring DIT. Please make this come to fruition!

Cant hurt for Pomfort to have some competition on set, might even move things out of the OSX lockdown.

Thanks to start this demand.
You make your still reference, add the scene, shot and take info, and automatically, resolve links this grade to the original material via TC.

I’m with you on this.
Also a DIT on set I use Resolve more often than not for creating dailies and passing on my on set grades for finishing down the line where Resolve is being used for the final grade (or I’m grading it myself).

There are very nice tools in Resolve for developing a more sophisticated look to create an onset monitoring/viewing LUT than you can in LiveGrade - hence I find myself going through a lengthy round trip process in to Resolve to make a look and exporting it as a LUT, importing that into LiveGrade and applying it to the LUT boxes.

Now generally a show LUT should be created by an experienced colourist in concert with the DOP and various test scenes during pre-production to ensure that the look will work well on everything you end up shooting but I often work on short form projects like commercials where that kind of prep just isn’t a thing so I often end up having to pull something out of a hat on the day.

I have recently begun exploring Firefly Cinema’s Fireday as an alternative to LiveGrade and it has some really nice colour tools (some of which I wish were present in Resolve) but I need more time with it and I am finding some elements of it clunky for my workflows and difficult to learn.

I would love to be able to work with the tools I’m familiar with in Resolve and just have it connect to a LUT box so I can use those tools with zero delay on a live image using just the tools that can translate into a LUT without breaking things (this can be more than CDL including all curves and vectors but no windows etc). I might like to run Resolve Live’s full effects on top to add basic vignettes and even OFX plugins and so on over the footage and have those settings saved as a look file/still that will match up with the camera footage when it’s loaded in. This will need some special modes and panels to clearly and logically separate out the tool sets you can use and disable those you can’t for each stage though. It might be handy to also have a CDL node type that just restricts you to those controls so you can test how those will work on top of your LUT as you develop it. This would also be really handy for generating dailies and offline proxies so you can export stills with CDL’s to pass on where final grading will take place in other software but you are using Resolve on set.

For an end to end system to compete with LiveGrade that does reports, all the look management features, multiple cameras etc will take a lot of development time. It would be nice to see a competitor to LiveGrade and something that breaks our lock into macOS (though Codex seem to want to keep us there or on their own hardware) but I think the above would be a good first step.

Thanks Quentin, that is also what I think!
Filmlight's Prelight is a good example for what I want, but I serves only the Baselight pipeline.
(of course it would be possible to export 3D LUTs from Prelight, but than it would be a manual
work to connect to all clips in Resolve, which does not really fit into streamlined postworkflow)

Team up with camera manufactorers and allow to store DRX Files directly in the files of ARRI Alexas, Varicams and every camera which supports live grading without LUT Box.

+1 on all of this!!!
CDL mode restriction nodes + lutbox support would be good start.

The are more solutions than Pomfort already. Have a look at FireFly Cinema.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

I know about Firefly cinema and the other solutions. My main tool (and the one of many DITs) for Dailies
is DaVinci Resolve and like I stated above I'd like to have an aproach like Filmlight with Prelight/Daylight.

In place of the 'make a new product' request, please list specific suggestions for additional 'Resolve Live' features so we can review.
