Minimum System Req for Mac (hardware) - low res/proxies

PostTue Sep 11, 2018 4:48 pm

Folks,

I'm an editor, working mostly at offline / proxy resolutions from original 4k material.

I'm very happily unning the Free version of Resolve on a 106 iMac. I need to export the project file and work on it on a portable machine.

I'm also interested in running it on a Macbook Pro 17 inch, early 2011 with 16GB RAM. It presently has Resolve 14 (free version) on Sierra.

It'll be great if someone would let me know if my 17 inch Macbook pro will run High Sierra and Resolve 15.

Please remember I'm only working on 1920 X 1080 proxies.

Thanks, Sanjay

I'm afraid not, even if it's the latest model with an AMD Radeon HD 6770M and 1 GB VRAM. You can test it with that one, just use the free version. But any older one and you are out of luck.

Why not even use version 12.5 for editing only? Resolve 15 can read older projects just fine.

Thanks for your answer.

I'm currently editing the project on Resolve 15 on my 2016 iMac.

If i try to open the same project file (after exporting it) and using my external hard drive with media, on my Macbook pro (2011), it won't work since That Macbook presently only has Resolve 14.

The other possibility is to generate an o project file for an older version of Resolve. But I don't think Resolve 15 (which I'm currently using) can generate a Resolve 14 project file.

Any suggestions?

No, it can't. But for editing only you could export an XML.
I know it's a pain that Apple has no large screen laptop any more, but that old 17" will be no partner for Resolve 15. A good friend of mine has one too and loves it, and we tried. No way!

Sorry to be such a bother and to continue with the same thread.

Will a 2017 13 inch Macbook w/16 RAM run Resolve 15 for cuts only editing?

Thanks, Sanjay

If you're doing editing only and need to be on a small Macbook I'd suggest using something else than Resolve.

That should work fine. I've been using Resolve 15 since the first beta on a 2013 i5 Mac Mini with 8 gigs of RAM and it's fine for simple editing of HD footage. Cuts, crossfades, adding titles, edits to audio, and even one-node color grades on ProRes HQ footage have all worked fine. It only starts to skip frames and freeze when you apply multiple nodes for secondary grading, use Power Windows, and anything else that asks more of the GPU (my Mac Mini only has integrated Intel graphics). I'm using it as a test machine; for actual work I'm using a Mac Pro, but the Mini is my daily machine and much more energy-efficient so I still use Resolve on it for some tasks, mainly testing to see how different edits might look. Also works great for editing audio in Fairlight, although I mostly use Logic for that.
Resolve 19 Studio, M2 MacBook Air with 24 gigs of RAM; also Mac Pro 3.0 GHz 8-core, 32 gigs RAM, dual AMD D700 GPU.

I did some testing with my wife's 2017 MBP 13" and it worked as described by Brad, albeit slow, and it was working really well with the eGPU.
