How to Get Audio from Resolve to a DAW?

PostTue Jan 02, 2018 11:25 am

Hi all,

I've recently made the switch to Resolve 14 (originally on Premiere) and I'm enjoying it so far on my first of a few small projects that I'm using to get used to the new system. However, I've finished the edit of the first project and am now trying to get the audio into my DAW (Logic Pro X) to do the sound.

In Premiere, I was able to export an XML (or an OMF if the XML played up which wasn't too often) and then import that into Logic. Simple. I tried a similar thing here but it didn't work. The 'Export XML' function didn't import anything into Logic. I tried an AAF and then doing XMLs and AAFs through the Deliver tab. The AAFs would throw up dialog boxes saying it doesn't recognise the XMF files and then nothing would be imported.

Some of the options (I can't remember which now but, if necessary, I can do them all again and find out) would import some of the audio but not all and it would be out of sync with the reference video.

I'm entirely inclined to believe that it's something I'm not doing right as I'm still getting used to the program. Any ideas?

You can theoretically export a reference video and all individual audio tracks to Pro Tools, as described on page 2515 of the manual. Logic support is spotty as far as I know -- I don't think this is a simple task in Avid or Premiere, either.

Like it or not, there are reasons why the film & TV industry kind of standardized on Pro Tools as a DAW some time ago. You can try to use other programs -- I know of some shops that did well with Fairlight (standalone) -- but to me, Logic is more a music-oriented platform. There are ways to hand off between FCPX and Logic, which would figure since Apple owns both.

The "Final Cut Pro X" preset on the deliver page produces an XML version 1.5 (.fcpxml) file in the target directory, which you can import in to Logic Pro X.

The XML references a video file (e.g. MPEG-4 QuickTime), along with the source audio, and includes a path to your source media (always ensure that the paths within the XML match the path to the source media):

[*]Video[*]
<asset duration="7871/24s" src="file:///Users/beta/Desktop/Score/ScorePicture.mov" start="3600/1s" hasVideo="1" id="r1" name=ScorePicture.mov" format="r0"/>

[*]Audio[*]
<asset duration="43101053/133200s" src="file:///Volumes/Sierra/Users/beta/Desktop/Score/StringsOutrigL.wav" audioSources="1" audioChannels="1" start="0/1s" id="r2" name="StringsOutrigL.wav" hasAudio="1"/>

<asset duration="43101053/133200s" src="file:///Volumes/Sierra/Users/beta/Desktop/Score/StringsTreeL.wav" audioSources="1" audioChannels="1" start="0/1s" id="r3" name="StringsTreeL.wav" hasAudio="1"/>

... et cetera.

Export XML from Final Cut Pro X 10.3 for Logic Pro X
