Fusion in Resolve 15 Issues and Questions

PostWed Oct 03, 2018 4:04 pm

I am having issues with the way fusion deals with image scaling.

I am working with media that is 3424x2202 that I am scaling full frame with crop into 2048x858. As long as I create a fusion connect clip, my timeline aspect ratio is respected. But that forces me to work at 2K instead of the original resolution. If I just open the clip in the fusion tab and work on it, when I go to the edit or color tabs, the clip is pillar boxed. It is the full image fit into 2K scope, but I am worried that it is scaling the image down and then when I zoom back into the image to fill the screen that there is some quality loss.

I've tried changing the scaling in the inspector in the edit tab, but it doesn't change anything.

I would also like the ability to preview my color grade from the color tab in the fusion tab. Is that possible? Enabling the viewing LUT helps, but it would be a nice benefit to preview the actual color on the shot while I'm working.

Additionally, in Fusion can I just create a matte to output to the color tab without having to make multiple media outs? It would be nice if I could create a separate matte that I could connect to my clip in the color tab so I wouldn't have to risk the scaling of my clip getting messed up and/or have to create a Fusion Connect clip.

Right now, my workflow for matte creation is to create a Fusion Connect clip and in the Fusion tab make two media outputs. One that is my unaffected clip and another that is my matte. Then in the color tab, I add an additional source and connect it to the node I want my matte on. Is that the best workflow?

Finally, does the Frame size settings actually affect the clip if you don't make a fusion connect clip? I changed it to match the resolution of my source media, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Is there a way to set it to automatically open a clip at its source res. Also the MediaIn and Out say the aspect ratio is 1:1 even if I change it. I thought maybe if I could tell it the proper aspect ratio of the clip that my scaling issue would go away, but it didn't work.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Best,
Dylan

I am working on a macOS Sierra 10.12.6 and Resolve 15.1.1.005.
