Round tripping RAW with reel names

PostSun Jan 08, 2017 7:49 pm

I'm trying to round trip BMMCC footage between Resolve and Premiere. I've tried all kinds of things recommended in tutorials and nothing appears to work.

When making proxies, if I extract reel name from the source clip file, my BMMCC DNGs have the file name with .wav extension as the reel name.

I've tried making proxies with either reel name extracted from the file or extracted from the file name. When I put the resulting proxies (which I verified to have reel names encoded) on a premiere 2017 timeline, export XML, and re-import the XML into resolve, with the DNGs in the media pool, the DNG's do not link.

Someone please help.

As I understand it, I don't think it can be done. You can do it with ALE's and Avid, but I'm not sure if there's a way to get ALE's into Premiere. Maybe somebody can comment, but I did a quick internet search and didn't see anyone who had successfully accomplished this.

I was able to get it working. I had edited my premiere timeline initially with proxies that had not been encoded with reel name. Later i swapped them for correctly encoded proxies but premiere wasn't re-loading the reel name. I solved the issue by loading the timeline xml into a fresh premier project into which the new proxies had already been loaded. Then re-exported an xml from the new project, imported the new xml into a resolve project into which the raw files had been loaded, and eureka

My work around no longer works. The 2018 version of premiere will not update files with reel names even when swapped using replace command and then round tripped through an xml. I'm going to see if maybe reel names can be manually added to the XML.

Why doesn't Resolve allow force linking a proxie to its corresponding raw file? So frustrating!

I was able to hack it by exporting an XML from resolve, and then importing the same XML timeline into a new resolve project with the reel name extraction protocol tinkered to match that of the xml (which didn't match that of the first project's settings - resolve put reel names in the xml but without a frame count at the end).
