Report: DR15 does not start

PostWed Oct 10, 2018 9:39 pm

Hi,

I've just started experiencing a consistent (100% reproducibility) issue when attempting to start DaVinci Resolve v15.0.0b.073 on Windows 10. I don't see any splash screen, but Resolve.exe is listed in task manager. Task manager also tells me that the process has allocated 145.384 K memory and is using 0% CPU. I'm here to report the issue and provide you with all the information I can give you so you can improve your product. I don't necessarily require a fix myself as I only use DR casually on rare occasions to cut clips from longer videos and will just use ffmpeg or something for the time being.

The output from CaptureLogs.bat has been attached, as has a dump of my system information. The password of the zip file is "davinci" (to diminish its utility for any web scrapers, sorry for the hassle).

Things I've tried in an attempt to fix this:
  • Un-install then re-install DaVinci Resolve v15.0.0b.073
  • Reboot PC(after re-install)
  • Re-install GPU driver (nVidia GeForce Game Ready Driver v416.16, dated 10/04/2018 as listed in GeForce Experience application)
  • Run DaVinci Resolve as administrator
  • Kill Resolve.exe and restart it

Potentially relevant additional information:
  • I recently replaced both my motherboard and GPU. DaVinci Resolve (same installation) used to work with the old setup just fine a few months ago. Since then I did not use or update DR. This has been the first time after upgrading my hardware that I've attempted to run DaVinci Resolve again. The old motherboard was a Gigabyte Z170-HD3P (rev. 1.0), and the old GPU was an EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 SC GAMING. Although I would expect this to not have any impact, for all I know this could be the droplet of information that results in a breakthrough, so I'm listing it anyway.

If you have any further questions for me, please don't hesitate to ask them!

Cheers, and good luck!

Could I ask where you got this installer from?

And if there is a reason you're not using the latest DaVinci Resolve release on the Blackmagic website?

Thanks for the reply!

I got this installer from the blackmagic website months ago, and still has it around in my downloads folder. When I went to attempt to re-install DaVinci I must not have noticed that a later version was available otherwise I would have tried that one too (and I'll do so as soon as I can!). At that point, with that assumption, it was simply easier for me to use the installer I already had them to download a new one.

I've got an update to the issue, because it's resolved (hah!) now:

The solution was to use DisplayDriverUninstaller to clean both my nVidia GPU driver installation and my Intel integrated graphics driver installation. After doing so I re-installed my nVidia GPU driver and was able to launch both Photoshop and Resolve without issues.

I found this solution after first experiencing a similar issue of Adobe Photoshop crashing when opening any document. Windows was reporting that Photoshop was crashing in a module called igdrclneo64.dll. After a bit of research I came across several people who had experienced the same problem, in various other software packages that are likely to utilize a GPU for compute (Cuda, OpenCL) purposes (Vegas, Photoshop, Maya). This strengthened my original suspicion that it was related to my GPU being replaced. One person suggested performing the steps above, which helped to fix the issue.

I suspect that, as I mentioned in my original post, the combination of me swapping my GPU and/or motherboard and then installing drivers for them without doing an explicit clean-up beforehand had gotten my PC in a state where some settings or files were no longer a match with the new hardware configuration.

Given that this seemed to cause issues with other software as well, I suppose there is no need to investigate a potential issue internal to DaVinci Resolve anymore.
