DaVinci Downloaded Successfully but not appearing on desktop

PostFri Sep 11, 2020 7:57 pm

I have now followed three tutorials spot-on, yet when it comes to finishing up and clicking on the app itself, I do not have it. It's not on my desktop, nor can I find it when I search 'DaVinci' on Windows search. The only thing that comes up when I do that is 'DaVinci Resolve Panels.'

This on Windows 10. DaVinci Resolve 16 (Free Version)

What should I do?

Please review the FAQs.
List everything about your system, in detail.
Which specific version of DaVinci Resolve?
Did you download from the BMD web site?
Did you try un-install?

If you installed as a normal user without administrator rights in Windows, the icons aren't added to the user profile. Resolve will work just fine, you just don't have the icons.

If this is what happened, you can run PowerShell as administrator and execute the following:
Code: Select all
Copy-Item -Path "$env:APPDATA\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\*.*" -Destination "$env:ALLUSERSPROFILE\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\"

This gives you the Start Menu items you need, then you can just drag a shortcut from the Start Menu to the desktop if you want.

If you don't want to mess with PowerShell, uninstall and then reinstall Resolve as administrator.

In early Nov '23 I installed Resolve from an administrator account and also by right-clicking the install .exe and choosing Run as administrator. Neither method worked - no shortcut was installed on the desktop in Windows 11 pro.

The suggested solution to run code harkens back to the 1980s. Blackmagic needs to pause from innovating for a second and take care of the customers.

Just to be clear, since you ran the installer as administrator and it still doesn't work I don't suggest running the script because something else is wrong.

Does Resolve appear in the Blackmagic folder in the Start menu?

The proposed powershell option does not work if you don't have adming access. In this case, the short answer is quite simple, just locate the Resolve executable in the Program files directory and start if from there. Once you have it running, pin it to the Taskbar and you have it easily accessible via the Taskbar.

This is a rather small but quite unnecessary annoying feature of the Resolve installer. All other BM windows apps that are installed together with Resolve behave "well" ie show up in the s´Start menu etc even if you install them eg with elevated admin rights from an other account (school or work computers controlled by IT dept or similar). Why oh why cannot BM make Resolve install in the same way as all the others???

As I'm on the topic of annoying installer features, an other is that there seems to be some apps or features that are installed by Resolve app installer that are "system" or "driver" and that at least our security system blocks even when I have limited admin rights to my PC. It would be good if the Resolve installer was "clean" and any drivers etc could be separately selected in the installation menu (so like the RAW modules etc). Now I cannot update Resolve eg to 18.6.3 without making a tour to the IT support desk while some other (earlier) versions have been installable without any special rights rights needed.
