I recommend to export with black bars, in 16:9 ratio. The file size is similar to the export without black bars, as they contain zero information.

Youtube doesn't recommend black bars, and it is nice to have full width when people come on your video, without pressing the full screen button.

For a lot of my videos I use a 1.77:1.00 aspect ratio. The Timeline resolution is set to this so no blanking is needed. The upload to YT has no black bars. Depending on the resolution of the screen you play the video on black bars will automatically appear. For instance, that widescreen ratio plays full screen without bars on my Samsung phone. You do get bars if you play it on a 16x9 screen. The pics show what you see on YT on a 16x9 screen.

How do you set it that way? 3840x1600?

I set the Timeline Resolution in the Project settings, and also the Image Scaling to Scale Full Frame With Crop. That way I can move a standard 16x9 video vertically to reframe it if needed.
