Loading EXR Media -> GPU Memory Full

PostMon Mar 08, 2021 11:52 am

Resolve 17.1 beta on win pro 64 here.
Just wanted to load an 16K exr image into media bay to check the waveform / parade.
(https://hdrihaven.com/hdri/?c=outdoor&h ... vondelpark)

To my surprise I got GPU memory full on a 2080 TI with 12 Gigabyte vram.

Googled and found multiple discussions but none of the tips worked.

Only solution for me is now to use Hitfilm Pro which has no issue loading the file.

Any idea if this is known issue in Resolve and being worked on? I did not find a comment from Blackmagic regarding the issue.

Since Resolve tries to load everything to gpu, this is inevitable if you want to work with source resolution and don’t have enough vram. Downside of gpu processing. You can try Fusion standalone or Fu page with loader node, not MediaIn.

I've seen data that suggests this is a bug in Resolve with nVidia GPU's.

I've seen no indication that BMD agrees and is working to correct it.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Might be a bug, might not be, but in essence, this is the consequence of all-gpu processing pipeline. There is a reason why some softwares have full cpu fallbacks or operate on cpu almost exclucively, they are not just stupid or left behind the curve.

Update:
Loading 4k and 8k exr stills work - only the 16k one triggers the memory issue.
