Change Clip Speed - Duration

PostThu Mar 11, 2021 1:18 pm

I am quite new on DR so forgive me if there is something I have misunderstood.
DR 17.01, Windows

I have a clip where I want to shorten the duration without removing frames. Change speed would be an ideal solution.
Reference Manual (August 2020) Chapter – 42 Speed Effects 836, section ‘Creating Simple Linear Speed Effects’:
“Change Clip Speed operations have the following options:
“Change Clip Speed parameters: Changes the speed of the selected clip by whatever
percentage, frame rate, or duration you like.”

However, when I select ‘Change Clip Speed’ field Duration is protected.
Furthermore, it shows the duration of the source clip instead of the trimmed clip. This makes no sense to me.

I would really like to be able the see and change the (real) duration of the clip to an exact value.
From older postings it seems it was possible to change duration in previous versions. A bug in r17?

Also note that sometimes when you click on different settings the window shows part of the panel behind Pitch Correction - here the Snap, Link and Position Lock icons

DaVinci 16.2.8 works fine.

Right click the timeline, and you get the opportunity to change the duration, the speed, and also retime controls which allow speed ramps etc.

OK now chop that clip in half and tell us what it says in the duration field now.

Still the duration of source clip. Yes, this no sense. I thought you talk about change speed. I apologize.
I am using "Change Clip Duration" for duration clip info on timeline. That works correct.

Right click>Change Clip Duration.

Or, CTRL+D.

You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Changing the Clip duration (Ctrl +D) will cut the end of the clip. That is not what I was looking for here.

For example, I have a clip with a ferry sailing into the harbor. The complete clip is needed for the story, but it takes too long time (getting boring). Therefore, I wanted to use Change Clip Speed to change duration. And preferably with a precise length (time).
This is not possible now when the duration cannot be changed shows the total length of the source clip rather than the clip I am working on.

Oh, you're right. I had the wrong idea about Duration.

You might try another approach.

Select the clip and hit CTRL+R. Use the mouse to drag from the top of the clip (where the arrows now appear) to change it's speed.

That's the right way but unfortunately it works bad when clip will be slow down. A last frame of clip doesn't stay on its position.

Mark the in an out on your source.
Mark an in and out on your timeline.
F11 - Fit to fill
If no Function Keys on your keyboard, find the option in a main menu pulldown. (I’m not in front of the GUI now)

Thank you, Dario,
I wasn’t aware that there was a way to retime a clip while inserting it to the timeline. Very useful hint.

However, since the Change Clip Speed window does not work like documented int the manual I still see this as a bug. In my situation it would be faster to just change duration.
