How do I write @ in Davinci resolve

PostWed Mar 10, 2021 9:16 am

In every other application I can write @ and special characters with my European keyboard, but not in Davinci Resolve... How is this fixed...? I have searched and found no clear answer...

Might be a Windows problem, since I have no problems at all on my German keyboard writing the @ sign, like in title fields.
I can also write it in clip names, but I try to avoid special characters there and even use underline instead of space (old UNIX habits die hard). Where do you see the problem?

Thanks for reply!
In text boxes, nothing happens when I try the regular old AltGr + 2 combo for @ and I am just starting a project where I am doing E-learning courses for among other things E-mail in Outlook, so I am presently pretty screwed... I know AltGr doesn't exist on American keyboards, but it works EVERYWHERE else in all other programs...

Where would you go look, when You say it is a windows problem...?

Same problem here with my Spanish keyboard. I have to copy the @ character from another app and paste it in the Resolve text box.

Since it's a different combination on a Mac (alt/option + l), maybe that combination is in use for something else in DR?
Check your keyboard mapping.

With my standard QWERTY keyboard I can just type @ using the shift key into titles, clip names, render names, and project names with no problems.

Thank You, guys, for your thoughts on this!

I tried your suggestion of copying the symbols from a seperate application and pasting it into resolve. It works, but it seems like a ridiculous workaround in such an advanced program like Davinci Resolve...

But it works, so I'll keep doing that... :D

It is an issue.

I posted something about it when the bugs forum was a thing.
When we are in any "text box" in Resolve, no internal shortcuts should be actionable.

If like me your @ symbol is under the 2 (top row with numbers) and you have to use ALT GR+2 or Ctrl+Alt+2 to get it, you can't because there is a keyboard shortcut wit "ALT GR+2 / CTRL+ALT+2" and it prevents you from writing the @ (or #°§¬| Which are, for me, on the top numerical row). - I have a QWERTZ layout

In this case, you have the default keyboard shortcuts using these keys, and that prevents you from getting your @ (and others special characters/symbols).

If you never use the "Audio destination X" shortcuts, just disable them like I did in "Davinci Resolve" (top left first menu) > "Keyboard Shortcuts Customization", or change it for something else. - Check my screenshot.

Like you, for months I simply wrote my special characters outside Resolve, and copy/past them back in it... literally hitting the Windows key, @, ctrl+a, ctrl+c, ESC, ctrl+v ... I knew it wasn't right but it was quick and was too lazy to check what was the core issue (I don't know any other application acting like this).

------

I would really appreciate the BMD team to have the "text box" (text+ and everywhere else where any text can be written) not affected by any "internal keyboard shortcuts" (specific to Resolve) when we want to write text.... in a text box. It shouldn't lose focus (imo), and nothing should happen in other parts of Resolve (the timeline for example) like a random ripple delete because someone had his finger too heavy on the ctrl key and hit another character while writing something in a text+ "text box".

I KNOW, we can make our own keyboard shortcut preset (I have mine now) and we can get around this problem by remapping any keyboard shortcuts. It's just a band-aid. For me, it's a bug. Correcting it would ELIMINATE 99% of these very basic problems (and posts about it) touching everyone who have a keyboard/layout that use the modifiers keys to access some characters (CTRL, ALT+Gr - which is a Ctrl+al-). That's a loooot of people.

"Why can't I write @" in 2021 shouldn't be an issue :D

For Windows there is another way to add the AltGr charactes by holding the (left) Alt key and typing the 3 digit decimal ascii value of the key on the keypad, then release Alt.. The state of the NumLock key doesn't matter.
Eg Alt+064 gives @. I tried in Text+ & Text titles and a Fusion Text+ node. There are many ASCII tables on the web, I used this https://www.ascii-code.com/.
Whether this is simpler than copy/paste can be debated but if you have to use the same character frequently it's probably a bit quicker.

Thanks for explaining. I agree that keyboard shortcuts like that should be disabled when the user is working in text boxes. All workarounds seem like unnecessary hoop-jumping to accomplish such a basic thing as writing @, $ and £...

Yes, I hope they will take this into consideration in their next release
