Best Computer Specs for Mac Pro editing Arriraw?

PostWed Mar 17, 2021 9:38 pm

Wondering what specs I should prioritize when buying a Mac Pro and editing ArriRaw in Resolve.
What Core? 12? 16? 24?
What Ram? 764? would more do anything?

What GPU?
Radeon Pro Vega II Duo?

I would like to be able to use the computer for Color and possibly edit in Arri Raw without using Proxies.

Are we talking about editing or grading too? Any advanced VFX, like temporal NR, optical flow etc. ?

So, why I'm asking is this: if you are not sure to earn that money back within one year or maximum one and a half, don't invest in any Intel based Mac at this time! Decoding Arriraw is not very demanding, it just needs fast media. I can play back Arriraw smoothly at 24 fps in an HD timeline with decoding set to half res on a MacBook Air M1 with 8 GB RAM.

These current ones are just entry level machines, but Apple will switch to their own silicon over a period of two years, having started in late 2020. Even the current Mac mini is outperforming the current MacPro in some tasks.

Don't waste your money.
