New 17.1 - Issues anyone? I'm have a few

PostSun Mar 14, 2021 10:24 pm

Hi All:

Open question here - please SPEAK UP if you are having issues.

a) I'm running a new Mac M1 Mini (16G).
b) throughout the Beta versions of 17.1, I had memory leak issues.
c) the last beta release appeared to have fixed this.

Now enter the new public release of 17.1 from last week. DISASTER!
- Massive memory leak when utilizing render cache.
- Performance is way down when generating any render cache.
- If I switch playback resolution, 50% of the time, DR freezes and will not even force quit.

15 min, and I'm dead in the water! - SERIOUSLY!
DR is up to 32GB use, and nothing will force quit. I have to do a hard shut down.
NOTHING ELSE is running, just DR, and I have 800GB free disk space.

I can't be the only one having issues. What gives.

Seriously folks... there must be someone else with issues, or solutions at least.

I'm using native iPhone & GoPro footage (4K) as I always have, and since the new public release last week of 17.1 ** Nothing but issues **

- Very poor playback even at 1/4 resolution.
- Any attempt to utilize render cache, reveals major memory leak.
- This public is handling the same footage, completely different that the last version 17.1 beta.
- Lock ups & freezes if I switch render modes.
- 15 min attempting any render caching, and my app balloons to 35+GB Ram, and system shutdown. (and renders at extremely slow) when compared to the last 17.1 beta version.

This is very frustrating, and I can't believe I'm the only one.

I really want to buy the Studio Version, but why if the public release isn't able to run as expected on the M1. Blackmagic developers, please convince me otherwise.

Must have something to do with the footage, I was running Red clips in a HD timeline on a MB Air with only 8 GB RAM yesterday and had zero issues if not trying to go full decode (which would be insane on that hardware).
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

but why now? Same clips, same formats, same everything -- only change updating from the beta 7.1 to the public release last week. Obviously something is amiss.

I even went through ever single preference setting.

But this is now night & day compared to the beta just prior. It actually worked.

Now can barely run the GoPro .264 files at 1/4 resolution.

And the render cache? 1/2 the time it won't render, or renders very, very slow. Even DR native text fusion comps. It can barely render them.... soooo slow.

And any render caching will inflate the app RAM until system failure - classic sign of a memory leak - same as was originally was happening in the beta that they seemed to fix.

Back to square one? I really like using DR... when it works.

Maybe you could post a source clip and a 1 clip drp that shows the issue for you... and even a Resolve generated log.

I found an obscure reference to a performance lag, and it solved the my problem.

Unknown to me, I tapped a different resolution on my iPhone, and recorded a recent small project in 1080, and dropped it into my usual 4K timeline.

This single aspect killed my performance complete.

4K in a 4K timeline. GREAT
4K in a 1080 timeline. GREAT

1080 in a 4K timeline. NOPE. Total nosedive in playback (even at 1/4 resolution) & render cache performance.

For some reason this combination also causes app RAM to continually climb 30-40GB within 15 min, before causing system shut down.

So, for what it's worth... sorry Blackmagic, I was a little miffed after battling for 48hrs - (backpedaling here)
- still weird that this single combination of low-res media in a high-res timeline caused my memory leak too.

Respectfully, Rob

Was it the smaller size, or a different codec with your iPhone issue? That is, had you been using say, HEVC but also switched to a smaller H.264, for example?

Was SuperScale activated for those clips?

Hi Robert,

Can you please share your project with a sample media which can show this issue - We are unable to see this here. You'll need to make it happen with a simple project (if possible) and export a project archive (.dra) - put it on dropbox or something and send us a link. You can DM me if you wish.
