Upgraded to Studio 17, performance drops

PostWed Mar 24, 2021 7:51 am

Hey y'all,
I just moved up to Resolve Studio in hopes of improving my H.265 10 bit performance. The opposite has happened, it now plays back slower than with the free version.

PC Specs (older)
Core i7 4720 2.6
16gb ram
GeForce gtx 960M
SSD for system and media drives

I've gone thru every setting I am aware of in Resolve and in Windows/NVidia Control panel. When I play anything in Resolve, the CPU utilization goes up and the GPU stays at or near 0%.

Any thoughts?

I don't think that GPU is capable of hardware support for H.265 10 bit.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

I have a rule of thumb that works very well and applies here.

1. If you shoot H.264/5, edit with proxies.

2. If you don't want to use proxies, don't shoot in H.264/5.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

As annoying as that would be, I imagine you're right about it not being supported as it predates widespread use of h265.
Guess I'm going to be working with proxies for a while :(
