GPU Out of memory work around strange fusion image resize

PostThu Mar 25, 2021 6:21 pm

Another guy coming from Premier Pro to DaVinci. It’s a nice program but man there are some features that really need attention. To the point, you're like….. Really? I must do all that just for that….? It is a give and take situation and I am sure this application will just keep improving. Coming from Premier I am disappointed in the stability of resolve 17 its not a stable as everyone says. And it is not like my PC is slow with 2 RTX 2060s and 64GM Ram all solid-state drives and a AMD 3700x cpu.

See video for my GPU workaround and the Fusion strange image resize thing with timeline resolution change.

Fusion timeline resolution change problem / GPU out of MEM

PostFri Mar 26, 2021 12:13 am

The problem I found is a strange one, but I am also new to Resolve so I could easily be doing something wrong.

I run out of GPU memory working in a 4k timeline…. Next line is PC setup to get an idea what I am working with.
2 RTX 2060s with 6gb ram, 64gb system memory and all solid-state hard drives, 3700x AMD.

I found a work around and it is to just drop timeline resolution until I export the final video.
Another issue I found is only with images in a Fusion composition. I set them up in a UHD timeline then when I run out of GPU memory, I will drop it down to 1080p or 720p. All text shapes or anything created within Fusion will scale accordingly with a timeline change. Any image in the comp will not scale correctly….. The work around was to just import a transparent UHD tiff and make a fusion comp from it. Then no matter what size you set the timeline the images will scale accordingly.

Also is there any way to see video in the timeline within fusion? I know you can make the entire clip a fusion comp but then you cannot easily locate titles or graphics when zoomed out to edit and then the entire clip will render when all you need is the graphic section.

Another issue I found is if I have multiple timelines and want to load another, I must reset the UI and make sure my clean video feed is not activated or it will crash every single time.

I have a complete video that makes showing my issues extremely easy but I have not “cleared the newly registered status”.

I am trying to make the switch from Premiere Pro to only using DaVinci “Blackmagic” but you are making this decision extremely tough so far. "Please do not delete this post too"

I am of the opinion that the memory issue is a long standing bug in Resolve with nVidia GPU's that will require a fix from BMD to actually solve once and for all.

Unfortunately, I've seen no evidence that BMD agrees with me on that.

Currently, that's the only way.

That's not normal.

The best approach may be to turn on Stacked Timelines in the Timeline View Options.

The biggest mistake I made after switching from Premiere Pro was thinking that my previous experience meant I could just jump into a new NLE without difficulty.

Nope.

As a new user, your first course of action should be to complete some Resolve training. The Beginner's Guide and Advanced Editing are an excellent groundwork to get you moving smoothly. ;)

For 4k, GPU with 8GB is recommended (but for real work, in my opinion, the minimum is 10gb).
You have two GPUs but only 6GB
I record video for you about fusion resize.

Thanks for the replies everyone I really appreciate the help. I am hoping to pick up an RTX 3060 with 12GB when I can find one for retail price. The scalpers selling them for $1k yea no. Just being able to work in a 4k timeline would solve a lot of problems without dropping timeline res to complete projects.

For sure :D It is like coming from 3DS Max to Blender. The nicest way to describe it is "Feature Rich"

My Man! Knowing how to correct the issue would be awesome. I unchecked auto resolution in a UHD size, it maintained the image size but then the text would not scale accordingly with the images so it just swapped the issue.

If you add text to the composition as in the second example in the video, the text will also scale well.

In the first case, if you have turned off auto resolution on the background, you have to turn it off in the text nodes as well.

Got ya thanks good sir, I will probably just use the transparent TIFF so I don't have to worry about any of the settings to save time. I can just keep it in the power bin.
