Resolve absolutely failing

PostSun Apr 04, 2021 7:58 pm

Trying to edit 4k footage shot in BRAW on Resolve Studio with a computer that far exceeds the suggested specs.

I have literally 4 clips on my timeline. Takes about 3 seconds for Resolve to catch up when I move the timeline marker (now it's not even trying, just going black...nice.) Using optimized media. Trying to change the settings to DNxHR SQ but every time I do so, Resolve crashes when I try to save the project. Every time. Like 10 times in a row now across several reboots.

I've edited 6k RED RAW footage without proxies no problem.

I am incredibly disappointed in Resolve right now. This should just work. I should not have to go through and clean out my cache 4 clips into a project. Blackmagic should focus on making their software work before adding more stupid garbage like smart reframe. This is supposed to be a Hollywood program, not an Instagram filter. Bash Premiere as I may, I never had these issues with that software. I just don't understand how this can be considered acceptable.

Perhaps try the latest version? Or an older one if you were on that already.
No software is perfect.. but I feel you. It shouldn't be lacking with playback performance of their very own video format.

I just delivered our fourth feature on Resolve 17.1 in 5 weeks and it's been OK. We've had more crashes than usual, but not more than 2 per week, and zero work lost. I'd suggest a beefier GPU with more VRAM if possible.

As far as I know, there hasn't been a Config Guide yet for Resolve 17 (or even Resolve 16). The hope is we'll see this when the Resolve 17 manual comes out at the end of the month.

It's likely Windows has changed the GPU driver so u might need to check what the GPU is using and update the driver for your GPU from the NVIDIA web site.

Thanks. Using CUDA with an 8gb gtx that edits R3D 6k without complaining. On v17. Benchmarked my computer and the stats are really good. Getting 0 fps playback on clips with no effects and now staring at a white screen of death for about the 10th time this hour. REALLY wishing we'd shot this on the Komodo instead of this joke of an Ursa (and bmpcc 4k.) Of course I now have a whopping 8 clips (totaling a whole 36 seconds) on my timeline so maybe this is expected.

Resolve absolutely failing

No, resolve is perfect (this is sarcasm, but you get my point)
Trying to edit 4k footage shot in BRAW on Resolve Studio with a computer that far exceeds the suggested specs.

What you saw are the minimum specs, no "suggested specs". Minimum specs != can run everything and anything perfectly in every situation.

Isn't i7-8750 a 45W laptop cpu? "Far exceeds suggested specs" is a biiiiiig stretch.
I've edited 6k RED RAW footage without proxies no problem.

People can say anything online, not saying it's not true ;), but with the tone of the post, meh.
This should just work

Nope.
In a perfect environment, clean install, no bloatware (laptops are filled with them, especially the Windows ones), throttling, perfect sticks of ram, etc... Yeah, it "should" work.

Unfortunately, nobody knows what's on your computer, if you don't have 10 anti-viruses, 10 applications open with Resolve with no ram left, no space left on your drives, etc. Maybe your laptop is filled with cat hair, with temps so high that it's throttling everything until it crashes, maybe the version of your NVIDIA drivers for the 1070 (laptop edition) is causing these issues.

Who knows.

Blackmagic should focus on making their software work before adding more stupid garbage like smart reframe
"Stupid garbage like smart reframe" You picked one of the most useful new addition lol.

You really should read your posts before clicking on "Submit", and ask yourself if it's a good way to approach things. You're free to say whatever you want, but don't expect others to be nice to you in return.

This is supposed to be a Hollywood program, not an Instagram filter

It works well on non-potato configurations :)

Benchmarked my computer and the stats are really good.

That means nothing, benchmarked with what and for what? Really good compared to what? I put my car on a dyno "really good stats", then I got a flat on the road. I mean come on.

Now that's out of the way, do you want people to help you? Because writing "Resolve crash when I save" means nothing without any context. Instead of wasting your time on complaining, give the devs what they need to find out if there is a problem with the software itself... or if it's your computer.
Send some crash logs and all the information about your system.

Or better, record your screen with all of these problems (with your "6k RED RAW footage without proxies no problem" to show the contrast between the two situations), then join the crash logs to that.

That's what I do. I like to think that it helped to find and solve problems faster by giving a video of what's happening WITH logs and other info.

REALLY wishing we'd shot this on the Komodo instead of this joke of an Ursa (and bmpcc 4k.)
Who cares? What does that have to do with anything?

TL;DR
I have no complains about Resolve, editing R3d 6k is great, I'll give 5 stars...How did they managed to make it work with my little 45W cpu, amazing. Good job guys.... But what a garbage software this Resolve is!!!!! It crashes, is this an "instagram filter"? :D
