Have severe memory issued when loading a Davinci Project

PostSat Feb 20, 2021 11:47 am

Hi,
today a severe issue occured at my site with Davici resolve free version.
When loading a project most of the ram and swap will be claimed by DVR. It increases up to 90 GB on my mac pro with 16GB Ram until it stops reacting, and a system message occurs " the system has no programmemory any more" . It happens with V16 and the latest 17beta. And on Windows it crashes.
This started when doing a "save as" copy of a project.
Then when reloading this project, the memory race condition happend. I use remote assets, but copied them local too. Same thing... What is going up behind ? Why is there a lot of memory claimed at startup.
I have a project (saved) that i can use as a starting point, but after one save and reload, its not usable any more. I have a project with all cuts (Multicam)and so on, but i cannot render it ...
Is there any one that experience the same thing and has a workaround ?
Thank for your help,
Bests Christian

You said the issue was with a project created using Save As...

What about the original project?

I had a project where i started from. But this is not there any more.
I wonder why such a big memory reqest happens at the start of the project.
I cannot say if it was triggerd by "save as" exactly.
But the project is constructed as follows : Multicam and 2 Timelines and MTS Files from a Sony NEX FS_100 (loads 00000.MTS and the follow up files are found) and wav files. I worked noumerous times with this setup, but now i have this memory issue until the whole system freezes (Mac OS-X).
I could do some cuts, then i added some JPG and Mov files as start and end sequences. And from this point on the project behaved with this memory blow up. I cleaned up caches and the like. Nothing changed .
I am at the end of my phantasy how so solve this .. Starting from beginning seems and option, but without knowing what goes wrong ... dangerous ..
Can i deliver some log, or system infos that may lead to a solution ?

So I'm leaning towards project corruption as an explanation. That's why I was asking about the original.

I don't work on a mac, so others may have different thoughts, but the only path forward I can think of is...start over.

I solved the issues for me. First i transcoded the Sony files from my NEX FS100 "AVCHD" archive with the Catalyst software . This created file that did not cause performance problems, although the file is even larger. My intention is still to preserve the original quality without having long transcoding times. Now i "repack" the archive with a ffmpeg bash script. This takes only a few minutes and gives me the feeling to have no quality degrading and resonably sized files. The result is a mov file that works fine with Davinci. the ffmpeg command is :
ffmpeg -i <file1> | <file2> | ... | <file n> -vcodec copy -acodec pcm_s16le -ar 48000 -ac 2 <result_file>.mov
Thanks for your comments ,
best Christian
