Issues when fading up and down in Dolby Vision SDR

PostWed Apr 14, 2021 7:14 pm

Hi everyone. Apologies if this should be posted elsewhere, I'm new.

I'm an online editor at a small post house (which means it often falls to me to troubleshoot problems heh). I start the project in HDR with Dolby Vision active, have my colorist grade everything, then run the Dolby Vision analyze to get the SDR. And it works pretty great on everything except where there is a fade up or down to/from black. The fade doesn't work evenly, there's always a pop in opacity at some point. I think this has to do with us not being in a linear color space, so when the conversion is applied it still tries to perform the fade based on an HDR space and it's not 1:1 for how an SDR fade works. This is just a hunch though.

Is there any way to remedy this? For the record I'm using the default transition that's applied when you right click on a cut, and since there's no B side it just fades to/from black. I've tried switching from a video to a film dissolve, but that doesn't seem to help either. The only workaround I've found is to just add keyframes to the opacity slider instead of using a transition. This is a bit more time consuming though, and we've got five more seasons of this show to get through.

Resolve studio 17.0 build 39
Windows 10 (I can give more info if needed but we switch between systems)

Hi Erin,

This bug only happens with Dolby Vision 4.0, not 2.9. Dolby is aware of it and it shall be corrected in a further update. This has nothing to do with the type of dissolve effect you apply or the way the black is generated or even the version of Resolve.

Actually, there are 2 ways to trick it:
- Use the Compound Clip feature to nest the different components of the transition (video clip + black) into a single container/clip.
- Flatten or render out the clip and black then reimport the new clip back into the timeline.
Run a new Dolby Vision analysis.
