Using Optimized Media and Render Cache with DNxHR HQ

PostTue Apr 27, 2021 7:36 pm

All my source videos are shot at 1920*1080 at 30 FPS and 8 bit. I m using "Quarter" optimized media resolution and DNxHR HQ codec for "Optimized Media format" and "Render cache Format" (in Project Setting). Now my question is can I (or should I) use the "Use Optimized Media" and "Use render Cache" option in the Custom tab in setting (in Deliver) during the final render process.

Using optimize media and render cache are helpful to get smooth playbacks while editing. However once you have done your editing and grading, and rending it out on Resolve, especially when you have done grading/corrections, you can render it out without using optimized media if you don't have any worries about how long it might take to render.

thank u very much, can u explain this a bit more. So for my DNxHR HQ codec and clips (1920*1080 at 30 FPS and 8 bit), if I use the "optimized media" and "render cache" for a shorter rendering time, are u saying there will be no Quality Drop in the final output?

Hope u answer this as well, If I dont have any optimized media available, can I still use "Proxy Mode, Will it be of any use then?

On page 3441 of the Resolve manual, it says:
If your media has been optimized to the same format as the one you’re outputting to (or better), this is convenient. However, if you’ve optimized to a lower quality format than what you’re outputting to, you should turn this checkbox off to force DaVinci Resolve to process all clips using the original media, guaranteeing the best quality available.

Hope u answer this as well, If I dont have any optimized media available, can I still use "Proxy Mode, Will it be of any use then?[/quote]
Again, from Resolve manual on page 201:
Using proxies reduces processing demands by taking advantage of the resolution independence of DaVinci Resolve to lower the resolution of your clips on-the-fly, thereby increasing real time playback performance without the need to spend time caching part or all of the timeline, or create optimized media.

I strongly suggest reading the Resolve manual and looking up on topics related to your asking because there are many options and different folks will approach things differently based on their skills and need. Here is the link to the manual in case you don't have it.
