17.1.1 crashing in edit

PostWed Apr 21, 2021 10:04 pm

trying to determine the cause of repeated crashes.

running new iMac (December 2020)
OS 11.2.3 (all drivers up to date)
128GB ram
3.6 GHz 10-core Intel i9
AMD Radeon Pro 5700XT 16GB

have run Apple's Hardware Diagnostic - no problems found
have disconnected all peripherals - no joy

editing m4a audio only, have tried internal SSD and external SSD for database, un-installed/re-installed DaVinci as far back as 16.2.7, no joy. edits for 1 - 2 minutes using blade, then crashes.

crash report shows :

Crashed Thread: 0 GUI Thread Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread

Exception Type: EXC_CRASH (SIGILL)
Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000
Exception Note: EXC_CORPSE_NOTIFY

Termination Signal: Illegal instruction: 4
Termination Reason: Namespace SIGNAL, Code 0x4
Terminating Process: Resolve [805]

also see that in every crash report (about 12 so far) Thread 1 mentions Fairlight Page :

Paul

The OS excerpt is not useful.

Please create a diagnostic log archive using the Help menu after restarting from a crash and add a link here. Please also include informaton on audio peripherals and interfaces that you use. Please see the forum FAQs on what other information to add to the report - including the build number, Studio, hardware drivers (as applies) and other software/virtual hardware interfaces.

will never understand how you can import a highly compressed and DRMed audio file
into a professional program and not convert it to WAV or AIFF beforehand.
the same goes for MP3

Thanks Shrinivas ~

Audio peripherals - Sony headphones - MDR-XD200 connected via UGREEN headphone splitter 3.5mm female to dual male; Apple magic keyboard with numeric pad.

Currently running 17.0B build 23, free version - this has proven to be the most stable of all the versions I've tried. As I am using Big Sur, it is my understanding all my drivers are bundled in the OS, which is up to date.

Using Handbrake version 1.3.3 (3030061300) - open source video transcoder

Diagnostic log attached.

I appreciate your help. Thanks!

Hi Paul

There's been quite a few stability fixes since that beta version. I would like to rule out fixed issues and possible problems with the external drive and audio splitter.

We would recommend trying the following:
a. 17.1.1 build 9 - with an internal SSD database.
b. trying the Sony headphones directly connected, without the splitter.
c. verifying that your cache clip and proxy locations are on your local disk - basically eliminating the external drive as an issue.

If issues still persist, a diagnostic test would help check if it is due to specific audio files/codecs. Starting up DaVinci Resolve 17.1.1 on an Untitled project and playing a simple LPCM wav file from the internal disk and/or an image or Resolve generator (if most of your sources come from encoders and screen capture software, test samples like this are commonly available as a reference).

Hi Shrinivas ~

Thanks again for your assistance.

I've installed 17.1.1 build 9 now, and using the internal SSD (all my paths begin with Machintosh HD - cache clip, proxy, database, etc.) I unmounted and physically disconnected the external SSD.

The audio jack on the iMac requires a splitter to recognize headphones (v annoying), so I disconnected the headphones altogether and used the built-in speakers.

after this latest crash (diagnostic log attached), I started an untitled project and played through all of the sample test files from the link provided to Fraunhofer - all went smoothly.

I appreciate your help with this Shrinivas. Thanks!

Paul

I can plug third-party headphones like my AKGs into an iMac without anything else needed.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.
