Resolve 17.1 fairlight plugins forget their settings?

PostWed Mar 17, 2021 11:24 pm

I think I had this issue once or twice with version 16 too. But the latest time is Resolve Studio 17.1 Build24 on Windows 10.

I saved everything, shutdown Resolve safely and then rebooted. When I opened the very same project and hit play, the audio was playing back at a different level. I opened the Fairlight tab and then looked at the Dynamics>Limiter plugin that I had placed on the master bus. It's settings were at default.

The plugin was on the master bus like before but it had lost it's settings. This kind of thing is rather scary. I can't be assured that the project will open up again the same way.

Another issue I'm seeing is that for this particular plugin, the release time changes when I close the plugin and open it back up. I'll set it to 125ms and then when I open it back up it will be 134.90ms. Or some other value.
So long as it's in the ballpark it's not a big issue. But what exactly is happening?

Plugin behavior is definitely a little off.

I disabled a plugin (Fab Filter Pro Q3), turned it back on and the settings were gone. In previous resolve versions, saving a preset automatically went to the plug ins preset folder. Now it defaults to one of the dr app folders. Took me a while to figure out why new presets weren't in the list.

I tried to use Level Magic. which had worked great for me in versions past, but this time it just doesn't seem to behave properly. Fortunately, this time I didn't have a large unpredictable audience to deal with. So I set the levels with the built in metering. If there was an audience, that would have been a lot more work.

Another behavior that doesn't save, Color Corrections On/Off. For me I like that, but it is different than before. It always opens with Color Corrections on.

The log generation is also a little light this time, or maybe BMD removed a bunch of irrelevant stuff, or maybe the problems are a lot less. Either way, there is a lot less info despite myself having experienced Resolve rendering my computer useless...while rendering. That's never happened before. That's for another post.

Is this behaviour reproducible by simply closing and re-opening the plugin window?

Is a user preset recalled or rather is the Project saved with the Limiter instantiated without a preset?

Is the plugin disabled within the plugin UI or Resolve's plugin window?

Does the save dialog not retain the last folder pointed to?

What is the issue with Level Magic? Is Level Magic version 20.12.049880 (12/16/20) installed?

When I made my OP it would change value simply by closing the plugin window and reopening. I just tried it again and of course, it's retaining the same setting. And that's what I've noticed; this is an intermittent problem.

There are no user presets being used. The spinbox says "default*".

I noticed the behavior when toggling the Red slider. Like the OP, it's intermittent.

Nope, just checked and it's using the project folder. Even after having once saved a preset to the proper folder. It seems to have to be done every time the project is closed and re opened, before now I don't recall ever having to specify the presets folder.

I tried to use Level Magic. which had worked great for me in versions past, but this time it just doesn't seem to behave properly.

What is the issue with Level Magic?

The faders in Fairlight don't seem to impact the levels sent to the Plugin. I'll check again after I have it updated.

Is Level Magic version 20.12.049880 (12/16/20) installed?

Thanks for the heads up, it's been so long since an update had been released I thought it was a dead project. Three updates in 2018 and none since, until the one you mentioned.

Since you mentioned updates, I found Fab needed an update too.

Upon closer investigation in regards to level magic, I think prior behavior may have been wrong. I thought the Master would reduce the input to LM on the Master (now called Bus 1 Master). Given where the plugin is placed that shouldn't have been the case.

It now appears the latest update works better than before, it appears the LM plugin now reads further ahead somehow so that modifications aren't so drastic and destructive.
