Same project, separate timeline, major stuttering only on on

PostSat May 15, 2021 8:38 pm

Please help, I may lose a lot of work over this issue...

I have a project where I had to create a separate timeline (because of a bug, mtf) but for reasons I cannot comprehend, this second timeline stutters like mad every half second. All project settings are to used optimized media and proxies (which I manually generate) at half-resolution DNxHQ LB, and even checkmarking "render cache color output" doesn't help at all. If I switch to the original timeline, it's buttery smooth.

Both timelines are 59.94fps with mainly gopro footage shot in 59.94 (proxied to dnxhq).

The "bug" that made me do this in the first place was I couldn't export the main timeline at the project framerate of 59.94. For some reason, it would only allow me to export at 25fps, even though the timeline, project, all the media, etc, were all 59.94.

So I created a separate timeline with 59.94 as it's framerate and that let me do the first export for a "screening" copy.

But I've since gone and made tons of fairlight edits and transitions before I realized this new timeline won't play back smooth at all, and I really need to make some speed changes in areas so it's critical that I get it working again. Like I said, if I switch to the original timeline in the same project, which as far as I can tell has the exact same settings, it's buttery smooth... it just doesn't have the 5-6 hours of added work in it!

Grateful for any ideas!

Collected additional information in the day waiting for my post to clear.

I think there's two bugs here.
The first, the main timeline on my project somehow got set to 25fps, even though the project settings were set to 59.94 at the beginning, even before importing media or adding anything to the timeline.

The other sortof glitchy thing is, seems that all proxy media / otpimized media is being generated at the framerate of that master timeline, not the project settings, or any other added timelines.

I managed to work around it (for now), by enabling dynamic project switching, starting a new project with 59.94 as the project settings, manually creating an emtpy timeline, unchecking "use project settings" and setting its framerate to 59.94, and then cut/pasting the whole timeline in.

When I tried creating a blank timeline "with project settings", it came out as a 25fps timeline, hence, having to manually create it at 59.94. Werid.

Hi John

Please follow the steps listed here: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=97616&start=400#p744316
to get a log zip file and an NFO file. Additionally, from the project manager, right click the project in question, and export a DRP file. Place all three in a file sharing service, create a shareable link and add it here, along with additional context (e.g which timelines/clips show the stutter and which don't)

Thanks

Thank you Shrinivas
I have placed the DRP and log files here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

But I'm not comfortable posting an nfo into an open link.

Edit: Forgot to add the details.
There are four timelines. "Timeline1" was the initial one, that I had expected would inherit the project settings, but for some reason, it is a 25fps timeline. That one plays back smoothly.
The one called "60fps copy" is one I created and manually set to the settings to 59.94 so I could do an export. I subsequently did a bunch of edits to that timeline, but it plays back very choppy no matter what I do.

I imported to a new project so I could carry forward. This appears to have been some sort of glitch that causes my first timeline in a project to get created as 25fps.
That, and the optimized media / proxies don't seem to inherit settings from the timeline they are created for.

John,

Engineering tells me the 59.94 fps timeline has non-59.94 clips, and the retime algorithm is set to Optical flow with the best quality settings. Given your system setup, this may be a candidate for slowing down your system. Can you try turning off the optical flow (at least for interactive editing) and see if there is a difference?

Thanks

Good day. Disabling optical flow has significantly improved playback on the timeline called "60fps copy" (which incidentally is set to 59.94) and does not seem to have affected Timeline1 which (again, for some reason) is set to 25fps and not the project setting.

Curiously, I should note that the clips I was having the most trouble with on the stuttery timeline were in fact 59.94 clips.

In any case, my workaround of posting everything into a new project with a timeline manually set to 59.94 has allowed me to progress work. And I'll be watchful now when I create new projects to ensure the main timeline comes out with the project settings (and not some arbitrarily-chosen 25fps). I'm not sure why optical flow was hindering playback of native 59.94 media on the second timeline (even with optimized medias generated), but I would grant I don't need it on all the time.
