Video from Canon EOS R5 not working in v17.2

PostMon May 17, 2021 9:00 pm

I'm having trouble working with video files from my R5. This is the first time I've tried shooting and editing videos with my new R5. Previously, I shot a lot of videos with a Canon EOS R. With my old R, I usually had C.LOG enabled. I never had any problems editing that footage in Resolve v16. I know the R generated H.264 video and my R5 generates H.265. I tried working with the R5 files in v16 and since it didn't work, upgraded to v17.2. It still doesn't work.

I am running a Windows 10 MSI laptop that has both the Intel graphics chip and an NVidia GeForce GTX 1060 graphics processor. My laptop has 32Gb of RAM. BTW, normally I have no trouble playing and viewing 4K video with my laptop. It has a 17.3" 4K screen. I don't think I ever tried shooting a 4K video with my R.

I shot 2 video files with my Canon EOS R5. The settings for my first video were 4K-U 23.98fps ALL-I. The second video was shot in 1080P (FHD), 29.97fps ALL-I. Both were shot with C.LOG enabled. When I try playing these video files with VLC, the 4K video shows stills periodically and the audio sounds normal. The 1080p files play just fine.

In Resolve v17.2, I tried adding these MP4 files to a project. In the Media tab, after located these files and picking one, it seems like Resolve treats them like audio-only files. It shows only the audio waveform and no video frames. Clicking on the play button only plays the audio.

I downloaded the latest H.265 Windows 10 codecs from the Microsoft store and it still isn't working.

Is there something I need to change in the Preferences to get both audio/video playing?

I'm running the free version of Resolve v17.2, do I need to purchase the Studio version?

The free version can't decode 10 bit 264/5. AFAIK, this hasn't changed with v17. You'll have to transcode them to a 10 bit intermediate format, to work in the free version. You'll probably need to transcode them anyway, in or our of Resolve, as your system isn't going to have an easy time of it, playing 4K H265.

BTW, you need to set data levels for Canon log, otherwise it will never grade properly.

Yes

Stupid question... (I've only downloaded the free version) Can you purchase it online? I don't see a way to buy the Studio version on Blackmagic's website.

Never mind, I just ordered a copy of the Studio version with activation code. I’m not a fan of dongles.

Don't underestimate the comment made earlier about transcoding. There is nothing on your system that can hardware decode HEVC 4.2.2 . IIRC all the Clog files are 4.2.2

So, are you saying I shouldn't bother purchasing the Resolve Studio version because it won't work with HEVC h.265 4.2.2 C.Log files either? Is Resolve dependent on hardware decoding?

I think I still have time to cancel my order.

Resolve Studio should be able to decode them, but software decoding only on your machine. If you want to be sure, post a link to a small sample clip and I (or someone else with Studio) will test it.

Studio will work but it'll be SLOW. Your 1060 won't be involved in decoding the file. If you google NVIDIA decode Encode matrix you'll find the Nvidia chart showing what the card can decode. Or go to Puget systems and look at the article from last month on Resolve and hardware decoding.

I'm also guessing your laptop GPU has limited VRAM. Sooner or later that will be an issue for 4k files.

I think my 1060 has 6 GB of VRAM. I don’t have any problems playing 4K h.264 and I’ve been able to play 8k YouTube videos smoothly.

After upgrading/purchasing Resolve Studio (v17), I can work with the HEVC h.265 4:2:2 Clog3 files from my R5. My laptop is powerful enough to edit 1080p footage but I’ll need to use either proxies or optimized media for 4K. The 4K footage stutters a bit during playback in the editor.

Congrats. What you are seeing now is expected behavior with your laptop.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.
