The document linked in the quote (except I had to remove the link to post this) states, that VP9 is supported, as long as it's in a mov container. Am I missing something here? Because afaik the container format for VP9 is webm. (In case anyone wonders: webm isn't recognised by Resolve. I've checked)

@philmzo : Most likely BMD would have to pay license fees (and those are per-copy). They don't rely on system libraries on linux because it's a compatibility mess on linux so they link to almost nothing external. But they could at least include AAC support for Studio version where we actually pay ...

Also some other projets might "get away" with not paying but that's because for patents, you're usually not a target if you're not big enough/solvable enough to pay up. The patent holder are not going to sue a small project or one that has no money because they wouldn't be able to get any money out of it. On the contrary, for those it's actually better to let them use the format to make it a "de-facto" standard and sort of force the ones that can pay to be forced to support that format and pay up.

@Vittelius: I encapsulate VP9 in .mp4 containers and load that up in resolve.

Hi,

I have been watching the discussion about h264 mp4 and aac. I use linux as well and windows would be complicated to use at the moment.
I'm far not a professional user.
Just would like to edit a few video of mine (action cam).
Video: MP4 (AVC / H.264 Encoding)
Audio: 48 kHz Sampling, AAC Compression, 4-Channel Ambisonic
The camera is 360 degree capable where (the most interesting) video modes:
5.7K*: 2880×2880 (2 files) / 30fps @ 120Mbps (60Mbps per file) : 360 Unstitched
5K: 2496×2496 (2 files) / 30fps @100Mbps (50Mbps per file) : 360 Unstitched
4K: 3840×2160 / 30fps @ 80Mbps : 360 Stitched

I found a forum entry that helped me to encode both video and audio to a different format (.mov and both video and audio codec was changed), however above the "VP9" was mentioned. Regardless I know or not what is VP9, could you please point to a document or share me an idea how can I convert my files to be able to load then after editing save (export) with the least work and least quality change? However I'm not a professional user but I'm willing to pay for the software if that is the only way to get it working.

Also the above (earlier forum entry) mentioned codecs spcification document is for Resolve16. The most recent is Resolve 17. Any idea where to find the supported codec document updated with Resolve 17?

Thank you for the help.

Resolve is great, and I use it on Windows. I tried it Linux (Ubuntu) and I am amazed that there's no support for the most popular format out there (mp4 h.264/aac). Until BMD can provide support for this, everything else feels like a workaround as most cameras out there shoot in that container. Resolve Studio shows the video but not the audio. There must be a way to support this mega popular container combo if other apps have support for it. Installing another external library? Unfortunately no Linux for me until then.

Search for "AAC Decoder" in synaptic (Ubuntu) to see libraries.
If it's tied to the the developper, BM have already paid the licence (for Windows and Mac at least), right?
What about the existing libraries?

Really curious about AAC omission on Linux as well!!
