Copy/Paste Sharpen attribute only to other clips?

PostSat May 22, 2021 7:38 pm

I am working in the Color grade page, setting Gamma, Lift, Gain, etc. I can easily apply the "Primaries" to other clips with the Ctrl C and Alt V commands. I also see "Blur" as a radio box option, but I am never able to copy and paste this setting from one clip to another. Isn't this option for applying the blur and sharpen setttings? It doesn't seem to work.
Specifically, I am trying to change the default Radius of .50 to .41 for all of my 250 clips in my timeline.
Can someone please explain how to do this?

I think 41 sounds a little high, but that's me. I actually find the OFX Sharpen Edges tool is better for this kind of thing.

One way to do this: using a Fixed Node Structure, make sure that all your 250 shots have the exact same number of nodes. Make one empty and call it "Sharpen" (or "Sharp" or whatever). Go to the first shot, and make a change in this one node on the Color page. Then, select all the other clip Thumbnails, and with only this Sharpen node highlighted, choose Color -> Ripple Node Changes to Selected Clips. Only that one node will be changed, and it'll be identical in every shot across the board.

One thing I'll warn you: I think sharpening is overrated, and I think many people have a tendency to over-enhance shots and are oblivious to the artifacts and problems it causes. It's actually pretty rare that I ever add sharpening to anything; I often soften more than anything else (at least in a mask or something). If I do need a little sharpening, Contrast Pop is one tool that can work well. Sharpen Edges is another, particularly if you confine the sharpening to a very specific place and qualify the effect carefully. Subtle is good.

Thank You, Marc

I will investigate your suggestion. However, should this feature work as I expected? Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?

I mostly agree about your comment on sharpening. My situation may be different. This project is a 16mm movie film restoration, using as a source a frame sequence of individual 'snap shots' from the original film. The .41 setting is strong enough to bring out the film grain, but not yet enough to produce contrast shadows.

Of course, it might be nice to decide to back off this value later, without having to make 250+ edits to each individual clip.

I'm also seeing some oddness here.

Maybe use a Timeline or Shared Node? Or an Adjustment Clip?
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.
