Divinci Resolve Studio

PostTue Jun 01, 2021 1:06 pm

I'm currently trying to decide whether to upgrade to Vegas 18 or Davinci Resolve studio.

I love the color grading in Resolve and the fact that I can set up multiple clips at once and render them all at once (while I'm not sitting at the computer). I set up short clips or do more than one customer project more often than I have to create one long video.

I'm a drone pilot that does a lot of real estate and use time-lapses, speed changes, tracking, and stabilization a lot.

One factor in my decision is overall cost.

I've heard that the license to Davinci Resolve is a one time thing, with all future updates, which would sort of future proof the software. This could be a huge cost savings in the long term whereas to stay with current trends, I would have to pay to keep upgrading Vegas.

I've also heard from one person that no, that is just for updates within a version.
Does anyone know exactly which it is?

there has not been a charge for any update so far, my oldest dongle is v8 and it's not cost anything so far to upgrade
but there's been no promises that this will be the case in the future

I bought my license at version 12.5 and it's still good for the current 17.2.1.

But it's been made clear that the upgrade policy can change in the future.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

At the moment there are no upgrade charges. So it will ne $295. If you find a seller that has the special bundle it will include the free speed editor. Vegas is a great nle but you would be spending much more on a yearly basis with it.

So, why not go for it? The hardware alone is worth it.
As already written by others, until now there was no fee for any major upgrade. But BM doesn’t want to guarantee that it’ll always be like this. But I’m pretty sure that Adobe (for example) will guarantee that they’ll stick to milking you like a cow, including hostage taking of your own work.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.
