24fps stuttering to 22.5fps in all formats and footage

PostFri May 28, 2021 2:21 pm

Hi Everyone,

I wonder if anyone as encountered an issue where DR is stuttering intermittently at 22.5FPS every 2 seconds I think? I first encountered this when upgrading the last version of 16 to 17.0 and can't get rid of it. it happens in all formats 8K, 4K and HD playback and with all media types R3d, Prores etc. Render Cache/Optimised media etc.

My system can handle 8K, and this is only in old projects. New data bases run smoothly until I change one setting and it forever plagued. Adobe Premiere can play the footage without issue so I know it is not footage or my computer/drives. I'm on a LaCie 168TB. Speed tests I'm reading in 1700-1800 MB/s rage.

I've uninstall, re-installed, wiped my hard drive and put a fresh instal of Big Sur. Currently on an upgrade of 11.4

Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro7,1
Enclosure: Tower
Processor Name: 24-Core Intel Xeon W
Processor Speed: 2.7 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 24
L2 Cache (per Core): 1 MB
L3 Cache: 33 MB
Hyper-Threading Technology: Enabled
Memory: 192 GB

My project is massive, about 140tb of data, and 100+ folders. I do have a lot of mix resolution aspect timelines that are different from the project timeline as I am cutting multiple formats for IMAX, so 4:3, 3:2,16:9. All at 24fps. I removed speed editor. I changed the user setting performance mode, hide UI etc, all the suggestions.

My suspicion is it's a data base error that keep cropping up or a DR/hardware issue that does not affect AP. All 8k files run fine outside of DR. I first saw this upgrading my data base from 16 to 17 when I added speed editor.

Any help identifying where this is occurring will be a big help.

Go into the Timeline Settings and switch to the Monitor tab. Make sure the Video Format matches the timeline frame rate.

Thanks Jim your comments did make me wonder if there was some sort 23.98FPS interpolation going on. Monitoring is the same 24FPS in both project setting and in timeline settings. I'm not using BM Desktop video but rather doing a clean feed to a second an Apple XDR Pro Monitor within DR and not through an I/O device.

Looking at the interval of the stutter it's not absolute all the time, but 2k or 4k footage is revert 24 frame.

I did try a fresh project, using DCI specs all at 24fps (not 23.98) and no luck. Fresh import of the source footage, shot mainly on Red with both project frame rate and frame rate of 24fps film and not 23.98. Everything lines up, but still stuttering.

Video preview from media pool also stutters.

I'm only guessing, but try using the "Minimize interface updates" option in the Playback settings.
It can help playback.

OK.

What happens when you bypass Clean Feed? Disconnect the second monitor?

What is your decoding resolution of Red footage setting? Try to set it to 1/4.
Is your GPU set manually to Metal (not Auto)?
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

How long is the project, and how long are your timelines? What is the resolution of the material, and how are you trying to play it back? I've seen slowdowns on the 2019 Mac Pro if I try to slam it with a ton of footage -- say, 2 hours in a single timeline, with lots of nodes. If I chop up the timeline into several smaller parts, maybe no more than 30 minutes apiece, it seems to work fine.

We have 256GB of RAM in our Mac Pro, so it's not like we're running out of RAM. Performance settings can also have an effect on playback efficiency.

Hi Jim, thanks, this actually does it 24fps smoothly!!! yeah! So what does this mean? I guess it a performance issue and not related to DR? When I play full frame on a single monitor with clean feed disable it's smooth.

Are people using to two DUO cards as apposed to a single Duo?

Marc thanks for your comments. The project is large, it has approx 100 bins, tens of thousands of clips and 31 timelines ranging from 30m to 2 hrs.

A Decklink is still the better way to go, maybe?
