Color Page - Handling fades with keyframes

PostMon Jun 07, 2021 1:41 am

I have some footage (single clip) that has a segment inserted in the middle that uses a cross dissolve on both ends of the insert. I need to grade the entry and exit "clips" the same, but the insert needs another adjustment. What is the best way to approach this? I've tried several different methods, adjusting the entire clip, adding a combination of static and/or dynamic KFs on either side of each x-diss, but so far I've not been able to get it to work. I also don't see a way to copy settings from one keyframe to another keyframe on the same node. (really?) Any advice would be appreciated.

Thinking out loud here... what about placing the insert clip on a higher track so that it overlays the longer one, and then dragging the insert's start end end fade handles in order to simulate the cross dissolve...?

If I understand what you're saying, I don't beleive that would work because there would be no handles to work with. I'd have to cut the insert out of the existing clip, leaving no handles on either clip. I first tried to cut the clips and grade the clips using dynamic KFs so that the end of one equaled the beginning of another, but that was a nightmare (and much harder than it should be). So I just joined the clips back together and decided to grade the transition (x-diss) with dynamic KFs. Since I can't figure out how to copy/paste settings at a particular KF within the same node, it's look - adjust - look - adjust, back and forth between the entry and exit clip on either side of the insert. Seriously, this should be a piece of cake.

What I'm suggesting is to place the long clip on the "Video 1" track on the Edit page, then place the insert clip onto "Video 2" and use its fade handles to simulate a cross dissolve, as shown below. Then on the colour page you can grade the clip on the "Video 1" track as a whole, and the result will be visible before and after the insert clip. And you can apply a second grade to the insert clip itself.
