Speed Editor Workflow question - audio syncing

PostMon May 24, 2021 3:05 pm

If I have lots of video files and their associated but separate high quality audio files which I will use Davinci Resolve to sync, what workflow would you recommend when using the Blackmagic Speed Editor in the Edit tab?

For instance, do I have to sync all the audio files to the raw video files and export them as new files before using the Speed Editor, or is there a better way?

Use the sync tool in the media tab to sync your audio and video, if you don't have timecode or scratch audio with which to implement automatic syncing.

If you have timecode or scratch audio you should definitely try that first, as it will save you time. I prefer to use the appropriate autosync + append command.

If you have to sync manually, use Resolve's sync tool -- it's very good, but it's not at all obvious how to get to it if you don't know that it exists. The trick is the switch the audio display to waveform view in the media page, and then you can select a video clip and an audio clip and scrub them independently to line up the clapper with the spike from the clapper. Click the "link" button and they're linked.

It's a metadata based link, so you can update it later if necessary, but more importantly you can just edit from there, and when you drop a clip that you've synced into a timeline, Resolve will drop the synced audio into the timeline with it.

Thanks Rakesh. I have tried what I think you have said, and now have some more questions if you don't mind.

** First set of questions **
In the Media-tab I synced all videos and audio as you said. I used scratch audio to sync.

I used the Cut-tab and add clips to the timeline and can right-click each clip on the timeline "Clip Attributes" and can select the "Source Channel" to either "Embedded Channel 1" (or 2), or "Linked Channel 1".

How can I determine which audio file is being used on the timeline?

Also I was using two audio recorders when filming the video with a microphone on each of the two people in the shot. I therefore have 2 audio files that I would like to sync up with each video file... but using this method it seems to only sync up one of the audio files.

Do you have any suggestions?

Also if I change my mind and want to unsync the audio files from the video files, how do I do that? At the moment if I add a clip to the timeline, it automatically uses the "Linked Channel". How do I reverse this to the way it was originally?

Can anyone help us with this please? It seems like a standard workflow many people would need, ie a video track with scratch audio and multiple audio files that all need to be synched and then used in the Cut-page to make the edit.
