No Audio - Meters show nothing - after upgrading to studio

PostSun Jun 13, 2021 7:54 pm

Resolve Studio 17.2.1 Build 12
Windows 10 Pro

I recently upgraded from Free to Studio and have lost my audio.

I see wave forms but my meters show nothing. Verified the audio clips outside Resolve have sound and have created secondary audio tracks with just mp3 music, still nothing.

I've watched all the top results on YouTube for "fixing DaVinci Resolve Audio" or "Audio not working"

I don't think this is an Output issue, I think this has to do with inputs or patching since NONE of my meters show anything at all (in Edit or Fairlight pages). I've got all tracks patched to Bus1 Out.

Something else to note, when I jump to Fairlight and hit Play, the play-head never moves and my video preview window does not play the video for the track, it just stays still like it's paused.

Go to the Media page. From the top right of the GUI, enable the Audio panel and set that to Meters. From a project bin, click on a clip with audio and hit Play.

Report the results.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Thanks for the response, here is a screenshot of the results

No meters showing anything.

Source clip is from a GoPro Hero 9 that I've verified has audio outside Resolve

here is the same clip on the Edit Page, as you can see, there is audio

here are all the meters during playback - the play head is moving during this screenshot and video is playing, as you can see, there is no audio.

I've toggled between Use System and Manual settings as shown below.

If I understand it though, those are for output. The issue I seem to be having is that Resolve isn't seeing the audio on the tracks themselves which is why no meters are working.

This section from your initial post is concerning and points to an invalid configuration.

Agreed, that and the fact that from within the Fairlight page, if I hit Play on the transport control, nothing happens. The playhead line (red line on the timeline) doesn't move and the video preview also doesn't play. I'm not able to leave Fairlight and go back to Edit/Cut/etc until I hit Stop on the transport control, so Resolve THINKS it's doing something, but nothing is happening.

I've done a full remove and reinstall as well.

Note, in the Free version, everything worked just fine, it's only started once I upgraded from Free to Studio.

Also note, in the Projects Home Screen on startup the project I'm having the issue with does not present a Thumbnail, even though I have video on a timeline in the Edit page.

The issues are Project specific?

Are you able to post a link to the Project without media?

A link to the logs may also be worthwhile: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=90190#16

It's either project related OR related to all my other projects being in Free while this new one having the issue in Studio.

In my other projects, created in Free, the meters DO work, however I hear no sound... I presume that's simply mapping of outputs though.

fully removed Studio this evening and reinstalled Free, same issue.

other projects that I've never had an issue with now no longer play audio, although the Meters do work on those.

totally at a loss. I'm an IT Engineer with a background in audio editing using DAW's, so I'm very comfortable in patching I/O.

and just to be clear, when in the Fairlight page, if you hit Play on the transport control it SHOULD play audio and show video in the preview correct?

None of my projects do that, you hit play and the play head just sits still. no sound, no video preview.

Is the play button in the Fairlight transport red with the Playhead not advancing?

Suggestions:
(1) Disable the GT710 and only use the GTX1080. The GT710 is limiting the GTX1080.
(2) Disconnect two monitors on the GTX1080 leaving only the single monitor attached.

On which storage volume is the media located (internal C:\)?
(3) Place media on a different storage volume.

Is all source media across all Projects in Quicktime format?
(4) Place only LPCM wave format files on a new Fairlight Timeline.

Any change in behaviour at any stage?

That is correct. Push the play button, it turns red, playhead does not advance. No audio plays. No video preview takes place.

Done both, no change. Pulled GT710 out of PC, no difference.

Good suggestions. It's actually stored on a dedicated M.2 drive specifically for Video Scratch work. Have attempted to add all kinds of media from that drive plus a different, SATA, drive. same results.

Have tried QT/MOV/WAV/MP3 and no meters move.

Is more than one audio device configured in Windows Sound Control Panel or is the Realtek the sole audio device configured?

What are the device settings in Windows for the Realtek in the Advanced tab (Default Format) of Windows Sound Control Panel? i.e. Sample Rate.

There are several playback devices, all of which have been tried. Would the playback device being set incorrectly stop the meters from functioning? I would suspect if the outbound/playback device was incorrect, you'd see the meters function but not hear it.

Advanced settings are:

Could you please disable all other playback devices in Windows Sound Control Panel and only enable the Realtek. Process of elimination.

same results.

since no meters are even registering sound, I really think it's about the input patching.

the Fairlight page not doing anything is also highly suspect

If you haven't tried already, I suggest you test by unplugging all USB devices except mouse and keyboard.

If that fixes the problem then plug them back in one at a time. My guess is that one of the USB audio devices is not getting along with Resolve.

I can certainly try that, but if it was a playback device being hinky, the MU Meters should still be functional shouldn't they?

Also, shouldn't the Fairlight page also be working?

Not necessarily.

I've struck situations with other (DAW) software that did the same things when it failed to communicate with hardware.

alright, I'll give that a try.

not sure if you saw or not, but it's project based. meaning other projects I open, those made in the Free version actually, do properly work.

It could still be something funky with audio routing within the project.

I suggested it because I've seen similar things reported about Resolve before, and particularly because it's such an easy test to conduct.

Possibly not.

Step 1; unplug the 2 hubs and test. If Resolve still fails, there's no need to do any more tests.

If the first step got Resolve working then test resolve again with only hub 1 plugged in.

Then do the same with hub 2.

Once you've narrowed down the hub you will only have one to test the individual devices on.

You'll need to exit Resolve before each test and then restart it.

Good luck.

Appreciate everyone attempting to help, this is beyond frustrating.

I've removed all USB devices except my keyboard and mouse, no change.

Here is the Media page with a simple mp3 file from bensound.com - this screenshot was taken with the transport control in play mode, the play button is red. you can see the waveform. The playhead is moving, wave form is moving and as you can see, the meters are not showing anything.

Here is the same Media page with the same mp3 file loaded in a different project and as you can see, the meters are actually showing movement. NOTE, there is still no sound being generated, and as you can see the Windows volume mixer doesn't show any sound being received. I have also checked each output device in the windows mixer to make sure Resolve is not present for any other device nor are they receiving any signal.

Here is the Fairlight page, note the Play button is red, this is supposed to be playing, however there are no MU Meters moving and the playhead is not actually moving, it's sitting still.

FIXED IT

Switched my audio out on my PC to my Logitech speakers from 1/8" analog wires to digital optical and got full sound back.

Thank you to everyone who had recommendations
