Youtube does not recognize my video as HDR. Help! -

PostFri Apr 02, 2021 3:50 am

I believe I am exporting my videos from Davinci Resolve properly. I have looked at many different tutorials on how to do this but still no luck. No matter what I do, whenever I upload my HDR video to youtube it processes it as a HD video, not HDR.

Camera: Iphone 12 Pro Max filming in 4k 30fps, H.264, HDR enabled.
Computer: Intel i7, Geforce 1080ti
Monitor: HDR compatible and enabled
Software: Windows HDR enabled, Davinci Resolve latest free version.

Your images didn't post.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I don't know if this will solve your problem, but try rendering one with the YouTube settings on the top of the deliver page with DN×HR HQX 10-bit. Don't publish it, until you see if it works. Perhaps just a 20 second test clip would be a good way to try it.
I don't have any experience with iPhone HDR and have no idea about their specs, but with my workflow, I've gotten very good results with HDR on Youtube from both DNxHR HQX 10-bit, and DNxHR 444 12-bit.

When you play your H.264 rendered content back, does it trigger HDR on your monitor? If so, it would seem to contain the HDR flag. If not, then it clearly doesn't.

I should also point out that I grade and output for an HRD10 workflow and have no knowledge or experience with HLG.

So I'm thinking those settings won't be HDR. (And I wonder if HDR isn't available in the Free version, since one of the necessary settings is greyed out.)

Here's what does work.

Hey Jim,

Heads up that while those settings have continually worked to produce an HDR tag on my Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, the settings exactly as you have pictured here do not create a file that is recognized as HDR by YouTube for me.

I am going to change my aspect ratio (currently 21:9) and see if it makes a difference, though that seems odd..
But what isn't odd in this day and age of HDR crazy and YouTube compatibility.
