Media drive sense check

I'm looking to update my system and wanted to sense check my proposed drive setup.

Motherboard - Gigabyte B550 Vison D-P
CPU - existing Ryzen 3700X (planned future upgrade to Ryzen 5900X)
RAM - existing 32GB RAM
GPU - existing Radeon 5700XT (planned future upgrade to RTX 3070)
System drive - 1TB Samsung 980 Pro
Cache drive - 1TB Samsung 860 Pro
Media drive - existing LaCie 1big Dock 10TB (Thunderbolt 3)

Does the drive configuration make sense?

Partionen the system SSD to 256GB for Windows. The rest and the other SSD both for cache. It's a complete waste to use the 980 pro only for the OS.

I don't think you'll find many advocates of partitioning the system drive. I would avoid.

Are you familiar with Resolve, and do you know that you'll actually need a dedicated cache drive? You may be able to regard everything but the system drive as media drives, or reserve the remaining SSD for low compression media or timelines where where you need faster media access.

My needs are modest as I as most footage is from 4K micro four thirds cameras. Given your comment, would this make more sense:

System drive - 500GB Samsung 860 Pro
Project drive - 1TB Samsung 970 Pro
Media drive - existing LaCie 1big Dock 10TB (Thunderbolt 3)

Unless you have a compelling reason to do otherwise, leave your projects on the system drive, which is the default location of the disk-based database, created when you install Resolve. Everything else is a media and/or cache/backup drive, unless or until you're forced to allocate thanks to access speed limits. For modest needs, this probably won't ever be necessary. 4K from m43rd cameras is usually h.264/5, and those files are relatively small. You don't need terrific access speeds.

And for modest needs, you can also use the system drive as needed for media or storage. Not a great practice, but workable when necessary or convenient.
