color correcting issue - how to bring back over-exposed area

PostMon Jun 28, 2021 10:05 pm

Hi,

I'm new to the forum so please forgive me if this has been asked already.

I'm a CG artist. I've been using fusion to color-correct my renders which are usually 32bit in exr format. I've noticed that a few times, when I tried to bring down an overexposed area, the controls in "color" tab won't reveal the detail. However, if I do this in fusion, or even just add a default color-correction node in fusion, it will work properly. Is there a reason why it act like this?

Thanks.
Boyang

Anyone has same experience on this? Update on what I've found so far: when working with linear EXR image, the controls in Color tab are clipping color range to 1023. This will not happen if I use color correction in Fusion. Adding a default color correction node in Fusion will also solve this problem in Color, but only for a while. It will start clipping the color range after I work for a while, then I'll need to disable/enable the default color correction node to fix it.

What I generally do when not on the Fusion page is to take the specular highlights down a little bit so they're not clipping, which they clearly are on the scope. EXR is not the most color-friendly format available: we usually try to use something simpler like ProRes 444 or DNxHR 444, but I get that EXR is very standard for the VFX business.

Thanks for the reply! I agree that the best solution is to bring down specular before render but sometime it's just too expensive to re-render. Fusion does most of the job nicely but it doesn't have the interface that color can offer which makes coloring a lot more efficient. Anyway thanks again for the input.

How are you reading that exr in, are you using some input lut? If you can't pull exposure down and values above 1.0 are clipped this clipping comes from some operation, possibly an applied lut.

Do you have cache on? The color corrector should be able to retain all those information.

I'm not using any lut. the only thing I added other than the color-correction node is the OCIO color transform node which I convert images from linear to srgb. It is also happen quite random. Color shows correctly for a few minutes after I switch off and on a color correction node in fusion. but it will get clipped really quick.

I didn't know there's a cache on the CC node. Could you please show me where to enable the cache?

I also noticed something weird. When it works, it uses GPU power. After a few tweaks in color, it will freeze for a few second, then start using CPU. I've updated my graphic card driver to latest and Resolve too at latest version.

That's your render cache kicking in.
You can find the settings here. Either disable it or change it to a format that supports the incoming data.
