Newbie question HDR on a PC Monitor

Hey,
I recently started with Davini Resolve and bought an HDR PC Monitor (PG32UQX) connected over the display port. So my question is, how to set up Davinci Resolve to preview my video clips in HDR? Is it working out of the box? I have the feeling that my videos in the preview are not displaying in HDR, or I'm not grading it correctly. The whites are not as white as I saw in other HDR content.

I'm new to HDR and DaVinci, but I want to start very soon with my footage to learn it.

I followed a youtube video named "HDR10+ from Panasonic Gh5 V-Log-L: Grading Tutorial. P3-DCI ST2084" so far but he is using an external Atomos monitor.

In Windows 10, HDR is enabled HDR-Streaming is on, HDR is on, HDR is on, and WCG-Apps is on. HDR is also working great in games and youtube. So it is set up correctly in Windows 10

My video footage is recorded with a GH5 V-Log in 10-bits.

Did I miss something? I tried it with Rec. 2020 as well without any noticeable differences.

You will need a breakout box like a Decklink to feed your monitor an HDR signal.

@mpetech then I need two monitors right? One for editing and one for preview. Currently, I have only one monitor.

Currently, there is no way to view HDR through a computer monitor connected to a GPU. I'm not sure the technical reason (OS? API? Blackmagic code? etc. Probably all 3).

For now, the only way to view HDR at all is through a Blackmagic video hardware like Decklink or Ultrastudio. You can connect it to a computer monitor, TV, or broadcast display.

Ok, thank you for your answer. So, now I have to buy more Hardware like a DeckLink Card. But the main thing is to know if I need a second monitor, or do I see the Davinci GUI through the DeckLink Card? I don't think so right? I think it is only for preview stuff.

That depends if I have to buy an Atomos device for color grading.

You need a separate screen. It's a limitation on the Resolve software side. Games and Windows can use HDR for along time.

This is very much a "poor man's solution" and not meant for high end work.

When grading, change the Output Color Space to P3-D65 (Scene) and disable the HDR options. Just before export, return things to normal.

Sort of kind of.

The problem with most "HDR capable" monitors and TVs is that they auto adjust the image black, white, midtone/shadow levels and saturation levels at least a small amount. Even with everything the user can control turned off.

So for grading HDR on a monitor that constantly shifts tiny amounts, you cannot be certain exactly what you're doing or getting.

For "home" use or practice it's ok. For pro deliverables not highly recommended.

Only on Mac should be possible after calibration and verification. On Windows it's going to be a problem. Resolve GUI preview on Window is not "grading ready at all".

How are you outputting HDR out without a hardware video I/O?

On Mac there is GPU preview which supports HDR as well.

Thanks for all your answers. My setup is only for hobby vacation video editing. I hoped that I can use only my hdr monitor for that without a second monitor but now I know if you have a windows pc then you need a DeckLink and you will need a monitor for editing and one for preview. Currently, I have only one monitor.
I think an Atomos is a bit expensive for hobby projects and it's not made for grading. Maybe I buy a DeckLink now and plug in my LG TV for HDR grading preview.

Windows users don't have the checkbox for HDR previewing in the app.

If you have LG OLED then this is good enough for your to grade HDR.
