Noise reduction completely messes up audio playback

PostWed Jul 07, 2021 7:39 am

If you use noise reduction in fairlight, playback in the edit page is always messed up somehow, whether it be with a weird echo when you fast forward, playing the wrong part of the audio as you scrub/rewind etc.

It's been happening for ages (Sent a project to Black magic about it ages ago), does anyone else experience issues with this? I'd love to just stick with Fairlight but this is pretty annoying so maybe Audition will be better for audio for now until this gets sorted, if it does

Assuming Windows and Resolve 17.2.2.

Is the inconsistent playback behaviour isolated to the Edit page or also present on the Fairlight page?

Fairlight Noise Reduction AFX or third party plugin? Track or Clip-based instance?

Not reproducing audio playback inconsistencies between the Edit or Fairlight pages on macOS.

Yeah It's on windows for me, it's not limited it's on both of the pages and is using the noise reduction that came within fairlight. I use it on the track at the end.

Other people have noted weird issues with it and I'm sure Blackmagic are aware of it since they took me through an entire process last time to send them everything I could on it but then it got ignored after that which was a pain

I'm not seeing any issues here. Can you supply more specifics for testing?
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Sure! Do you mean a project or what I do with it?

So Basically I record the audio into audition from a mixing desk with two mics, which comes with a L and R channel. I duplicate the channel and then go into clip attributes to change each one to have both of the same channels, leaving it Stereo but just from one mic source each (the girl has her own track and the boy has his own track)

Then when I add a noise reduction and play around a bit the issues start, seems fine at first

If you go back to the edit page after this, and start playing and stopping you'll notice weird issues, it changes per project.

The main one that is always there is if I fast forward through the footage then an echo appears of the audio. Also if you scrub left and right quickly (use the arrow keys) you'll notice the audio is playing a completely different part sometimes and picking up audio from up to 20 frames away which makes it hard for precise cuts.

Again it all works perfectly fine until noise reduction comes into play and it's been like this for me for about a year now since I started with Resolve, through all the updates

Your work flow is a bit odd. Try just changing Clip Attributes so each side is treated as mono.

Yeah that's the way I used to do it actually, just making it mono lowers the overall volume so I started doing it this way instead, since I still needed to adjust the clip attributes either way to make it play the right track

But even with that it still happens, and to others as a few others pointed it out last time I made the post

Alright, let's test hardware and drivers.

Can you share a small .dra showing the issue?

Sure will do! I'm just about to go filming all day today but I'll get a little bit of one tomorrow and upload a google drive link :) thanks again!

Here you go Jim - https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

I was doing a quick tutorial on the alpha channels for some people at work, it's not as prominent on here as it is my other projects but I'll explain 'how' it messes up.

- So if you use this project (mute the first track) and just shove Noise Reduction on the track of me speaking (leave it as default just to see what's happening)

- Go back to the edit page, and hit play, the audio takes a few frames to even start (it doesn't do this without noise reduction)

- Press Left/Right quickly on your keyboard, instead of playing those two frames of audio, you can tell it's picking up frames from other areas of the audio surrounding it (again, doesn't happen without noise reduction)

Those are just two examples of what's going wrong
