Low power configuration for Davinci

PostTue Aug 03, 2021 6:20 am

hello,

I study a configuration for van use (if possible).

Obviously, I can't get same processing power with a 12V NUC then a video workstation.

But, is it possible to make some corrections for short sequences given at last time or formatting local records ?

What are you editing? Plenty of laptops that can handle more basic edits just fine. Even without getting into the high powered laptops.

The big problem is the screens aren't exactly great for colour.

for given videos, it's surprise ! Internal capture will use bmpcc 4K.

Processing will be : cutting, colors correction, light...

NUC allows large screens and 4K HDMI output will be converted to sdi for mixer.

have a nice day.

I have no idea what a 12V NUC is, but if you're looking for something that will work on lower system requirements then you should be probably using something else.

Hi.

In Resolve the CPU is used to run the app, disk I/O, fusion, compression and decompression of codecs.
Resolve does all its image processing in the GPU on the graphics card. More CUDA/OpenCL Cores are better.

Resolve do all its Image processing in RGB fp32. 4K videos have 4 times the pixels of HD. And for 4K is the absolute minimum 6 GB of vRam on the Graphics Card, but minimum 8 GB of vRam or more are recommended.

Get a gaming laptop with 3080 such as asus rog. Forget about doing anything with a NUC.

Most NUCs are laptops in a non laptop case. There are NUCs with some pretty beefy desktop GPUs if the OP really wanted that. I agree he'd be better off with a laptop but because an external screen can use more power than a full desktop. Not because the NUC would be underpowered.

Today, the best ratio of computing power to electric power are the Apple M1 machines by quite a margin.
Unfortunately, the current machines are entry-level ones and I wouldn't call them a serious video workstation.
If you have some time to wait, you can hope for the second generation.

thanks for all answers.

to reply to questions,
- we have several powering schemes from 230V AC city line, generator to last reduced functionality mode with only 12V battery. So mini PC (NUC) with 12V input is the last chance !

- Two models stand out from the crowd : Ryzen 5 4500U with radeon graphics 6 cores or intel core i9 10880H with uhd graphics. As said far from workstation.

- Laptop may be a solution but asus is oversized for the last rescue system.

@Carsten : gpu is important : so with integrate graphics card, any chance to work with ?

Hi.

The OpenCL performanece for a GeForce RTX 3060 is 96463
Compared to Intel(R) HD Graphics 630 which is 4876.

Both From: https://browser.geekbench.com/opencl-benchmarks

That Is a difference of 19.8 times. I am sorry to tell you. But you will need the performance of a real separate Graphics Card.

hello,

thanks, you really helped me. I forget idea of mini PC with integrated card.

Last option may be ITX motherboards with DC to ATX power supply. But the more power I can sink is only 300W. So with 7OW processor, graphic card can only draw 200W. Physical laws order that graphics computing needs electrical power but I'm not asking for a racing bolid ! Are there any graphic cards with enough capacity for Davinci sinking less then 200W ?

I don't think I stuttered before but:

If you can't get a proper computer to run Resolve, you should probably use some other software. Just barely getting something to run is different than actually trying to get something done with an underpowered system.

Let's start over:
- Which other formats will you use?
- How many tracks of multicam?
- Will you need demanding effects like NR?
- Will this be your only workstation or is it just for initial preparation after recording?

Just for examples:
You can edit and apply some basic grading to BRAW footage with an MB Air or Mac mini base model. Very low power.
You'll need a serious GPU like a 3090 and a potent workstation for editing and denoising multicam clips from a H.265 source in 422 and 10 bit. Up to 1.000 Watt.

Either get an Apple M1 or 3080 laptop. You can power them from 12v. Maybe you need a tiny inverter. If peak power consumption is a problem, a laptop also helps, as it can also use the battery.

Just get another car battery and an inverter to whatever the laptop PSU outputs. No need to go all the way up to 110/220 volts and through the laptop PSU.

Thanks for this active support 8-)

answering questions :
- internal captures will be done with bmppc 4K, so certainly in braw (not mandatory). External sequences are given at the last time, so format is unknown.
- works on this sequences are limited to cut (define start/stop), light control (dark/bright), color (light rvb control)
- I think of using Davinci for general traitment. Learning one soft is more simple but if it's not the right tools, I can envisage a second soft.
- Energy conversion down/up/down lost power : when all sources fail, direct battery connection allow more resilience.
- it's an option : if not possible, I will use standard PC only when van will be connected to power line.

have a nice day

The MB Air M1 will be a good option then. It is really fast with BRAW, editing and minor corrections of contrast, intensity and even overall color cast are no problem. It also accepts about any H.264/265 codec with the Studio version.

I can run it off power for about 8 hours if not too many external drives are hanging on it, so you have your own UPS.
