DVR 17.3 - PC - No ProRes codec

PostThu Sep 16, 2021 7:47 am

Hi all,
I recently downloaded DVR 17.3.1. Cant select Quicktime / Prores 4444 codec from DVR Deliver. It doesnt appear as an option at all. I can see DNxHQ, Uncompressed ARGB and others.

Oddly enough when I run Fusion Studio (standalone) I can see/output QT Proress4444 no probs.

If it helps, I'm running Win10. Quictime 7.7.9.

Thanks in adv..

To get ProRes output from Resolve on Windows you'll have to use the Voukoder plugin for Resolve.

Or if you're a Studio user, install Fusion Studio and do an extra processing step where you export dnxhr from resolve, load that in Fusion Studio, then export ProRes from there.

Be aware that the Voukoder option is not 'official' ProRes. It's a reverse engineered version. It should be fine and indistinguishable, but technically its not identical.

Requests for ProRes export in Windows have been made many times but it doesn't seem to be of interest to BMD.

True about Voukoder. To get official ProRes you could go the Assimilate Play Pro route to convert.

thanks for the tips.

[EDIT] I cannot seem to get any alpha channel rendered into a Prores sequence using Voukoder codec. I will explore the Voukoder forums; unless someone here has had the same issue. Please see settings below. Cheers.

Hmm, there should be an "Export Alpha" tickbox in Resolve. Without that it won't pass the alpha.

If you don't see that, that might be a bug or limitation with the encoder plugin. I'm not on Windows so can't test that.

No alpha support in Voukoder yet.

Apparently, developer is waiting for information from BM on how to implement this.

No possibility to use another codec?

Thanks for clarification at your end peeps.

Yeah I too posted on Voukoder forum with similar response from their Admin.

Though as I mentioned, I can output Proress via Fusion Studio standalone npo problems - Why is that?

Probably a different licensing agreement. AFAIK, Fusion can't do batch rendering of ProRes.
But it's a workaround anyway.

You can render many fusion comps, which all write prores, in batch. Main reason I can think of why Resolve doesn’t have is that BMD is unwilling to comply with prores licensing terms, which probably need some kind of inspection of implementation in Resolve. It has been established pretty solidly by other software companies that prores licencing itself costs nothing (as in zero dollars).
I do stuff.
