Is DaVinci Resolve H.264 / H.265 free for commercial use?

PostTue Sep 21, 2021 11:33 am

Hello.

I am new to video editing and I plan to use it for commercial use (selling online courses and making YouTube monetized videos). Up to 4K 30p + stereo sound. I am from Poland / European Union.

I am using now DaVinci Resolve 17 free, but I plan to buy Studio version in this or next year (preferably this).

PC is: Ryzen 5950X (16c/32t), RTX 3090, 32GB RAM.
Camera is: Sony A6400 @ 4K UHD 30p
USB mic is: Samson G-Track Pro @ 24-bit 48kHz

My question is:
Is using H.264 / H.265 codec free when the video is encoded in DaVinci Resolve and selled/distributed in this codec/format?
Or I still have to pay royalties (since online courses would not be free to watch like YouTube monetized videos)?
If so - could you tell if there are video codecs for encoding either in free or Studio version - which are free to use when selling online courses videos?
Which would suit my needs the best?

Regards!

Even the encodings done by Handbrake, which is free, can be used commercially.
But the ones from DR are generated much faster in Studio with the right GPU.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Thank you.

I still have my worries:

https://streaming4thepoor.live/as-a-sma ... -and-h265/
"Per-Title PPV
These include platforms that sell access to content on a per-title basis. Royalties are either (A) a fixed value per sale or (B) a percent from sales to end-users, in some cases the lesser of the two. Note that titles (i.e. videos) 12 minutes or less are exempt from such royalties."

My situation is - if I have my own website, which would sell online courses (users can watch them on my website or download them, longer than 12 minutes), would I have to pay royalties or is it still free?

Additional question - what codecs in DaVinvi Resolve Studio (paid version) are free to use commercially (selling online courses)?

2TB SSD (OS, WD SN850) + 2x2TB RAID 0 SSD (Storage, XPG SX8200 Pro)
