Can't add still images to timeline

PostTue Jul 04, 2017 6:12 am

Hello! I'm a bit new to DaVinci Resolve 14 and I'm trying to edit with some .jpg pictures I took. However, I can't drag or import them into the timeline, it won't allow me to. Am I missing something?

Thanks!

Assuming you can see them in the media page viewer, place them in a bin within the media pool and then on the edit page drag and drop.

Be careful that each still or .jpg has a unique name in project. OS accepts that files have the same name provided that it is in different directories: not Davinci Resolve ;)

Done that, tried it in two different bins, but it won't let me drag it in, it shows a little denied circle when I hover it over the timeline.

Thank you for the tip! Sadly, this didn't work either, I renamed the pictures I was using just in case, but I'm still having the same problem.

Ok, so I just got it to work, I clicked on the V1 on one of my video tracks. Now it has a red outline and I can drag in the pictures. Not sure why that worked but I'll take it!

Hi Dabe, that's a fairly fundamental operational issue. Can i suggest you sit with the manual and become more familiar with the edit page controls? Its quite extensive and an easy read.

Make sure the jpgs are RGB, resolve wont let you use a CMYK image on the timeline

I'm having the same problem. Resolve is recognizing a sequence of 5 jpegs as a multi-clip or something, grouping them as a single file, but with no apparent way to show only one and drag it out over several seconds in the timeline or separate them. it's just a very narrow frame that I can't do anything with given my understanding.

Making the V1 be active by clicking worked for me when I was having that problem too. But the same problem is happening again and that isn't the solution this time. I don't have any duplicate files in the media bin. It will accept a short version of the image sometimes and others not. And the short version of the image can't be lengthened.
Very new and need a lot of help

This just started happening to me in a project in Resolve 17.3.2 macOS Big Sur 11.6. On the edit page, my properly-prepared PNG stills would not go onto the timeline. In fact, no graphic I brought in from my system would, even some random JPEGs. I tried dragging them directly to the timeline from both the bin and the source window, sliding them over to insert/overwrite and creating a new track for them.

However, I went over to the Cut page and they went right in. I then went pack to Edit and did the work I needed to. What gives?? I am transitioning to resolve from Premiere, but I've been editing since the reel-to-reel days and am not particularly new to this.

Having same problem, and searching found this thread.

I think it has to do something with the specific file I'm trying to add - because I attempted to drag a different graphics file, and that one worked.

The file that didn't work, it was downloaded from wikicommons, so I assume there is no DRM lock on the file. In macOS I went into the GET INFO panel and unlocked it, and allowed READ/WRITE for everyone, but that didn't solve it. I converted to file to different formats, but still no solution.

It's quite odd, because when I use Skitch to make any screen shot, I can easily drag the resulting file into Davinci. But when I make a screen shot of this particular problematic image, the resulting screen shot I cannot drag into Davinci. Is there such a thing as a lock on a file that, even when you try to make a screen shot, the lock still operates? Never heard of that before.

I also tried all the suggestions on this thread, but none worked.

Here are links to the file. The wikicommons page says the file comes from the Wellcome public domain collection, and it tried the file from there, and it had the same problem.

Notably, other JPEG files from this website had no trouble being dragged into Davinci. So it could be something specific about this particular JPEG file.

Both of those files open neither in Preview nor in Photoshop and even crash ExifInfo. I can only hope they are not infected.
Forget about them or ask at the source.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

OK, that must have been a server or download hiccup. They work fine here too, including DR.

I can't explain it. I've just downloaded it again from WikiCommons, and when I tried to drag the JPEG from the Mac's Finder into the Media Pool, it won't do it.

Even instead of draggig it, I've tried the IMPORT command, and even that doesn't work.

Can you open them in Preview? If so, convert to PNG or anything else supported in Resolve and try again.

I can open the file in Preview. Previously, I had tried all that - and it didn't work. I just tried it again, and no success.

When I drag the file to the Media Pool, it shows the green cross sign - but then when I release the mouse button, nothing happens.

This technical problem is discussed in this tutorial.

Lee Dolphin, the YouTuber, says the problem arises because Windows is being run in Administrator mode, and he shows a workaround.

But I'm using a Mac M1, and am running it in Administrator mode - and I don't know how to get around this to avoid this problem in DVR. (I first saw the problem in 17.3.2 and it continues in 17.4).

Could be an M1-specific issue I guess. Are you saying you can't drag any images to Resolve?

If you can drag some but not others, it doesn't sound like anything like what the video is talking about.

Did you try the image I uploaded for you?

Yes, I did download the file from your Google Drive. With that file, I still could not drag it into the Media Pool --- although I am able to drag it directly into the Fusion workspace (but not the Fusion tab's Media Pool).

I am now seeing this problem with other graphic files, not just this example. So I believe it was a red herring to think it was this particular file.

To clarify:

I cannot drag any graphic files directly into the Media Pool. I've tried the Media Pools in the Media-tab, Edit-tab and Fusion-tab. All do not work.

But I can drag files directly into Fusion nodes area.

The problem happens with many graphic files that I tried. I only gave a link to a sample graphic, at the request of Peter Chamberlain, but I confirm it is not a specific file. We got sidetracked on that. It is a general issue that is problematic with all graphic files I tried.

It's the exact problem described in the above YouTube video.

I'm presently using a fresh install of 17.4 Studio Mac M1 (and the issue was there when using 17.3.2)

If I create a fresh Project, try to drag a graphic file into the Media Pool, and it doesn't go in -- not sure if theres anything that will show up in a log file when, technically, nothing has happened in the new Project. From what was said in the above YouTube video, it sounds like a system level bug.

Mac Mini M1, 16GB, Big Sur, 11.5.2

DVR latest Studio version 11.4, but saw the error in earlier 11.3.2

The above YouTube video indicates other people are experiencing the same problem. That video was dated February 2021, so the problem does not appear to be recent. That YouTuber said that many of the people following his channel had said they experienced the same problem too.

There's reasons why I'm not updating to 11.6 immediately - and they're not related to computers. Complicated to explain.

The YouTube video above indicates the issue is experienced by a wider group of people on Mac and PC.

It seems not to be a consistent bug, since not every person is experiencing it.

As a last resort, what about installing a fresh system on an external drive and a fresh install of DR?

In this video @0:12 he says that some of his subscribers to his channel were experiencing this problem on PC, so it doesn't seem to be related to the problems of specific machines, but seems to be how Davinci relates to the operating systems of Windows and Mac?

On my Mac, I only a few weeks ago had a complete clean install done at a Mac shop, and mainly use it for video editing and some web browsing, and not for my main office work. So it's a fairy pristine install at the moment.

I can't be the only one, who thinks this is extremely un-intuitive?
Why would you have to click on a video track, to be able to drag in the media on a completely different track?
Meaning, if no track is selected, I can't drag in the media on any track.
But if I select track 1, I can now drag it onto track 1, 2, 3, 4 etc.
But if I De-select track 1, I can't drag it onto any track, not on track 1, nor on any other tracks.
That doesn't make sense to me.
