Resolve 17 randomly crashing on a fresh gaming PC

PostWed Oct 20, 2021 3:38 pm

EDIT: Added steps for how I finally managed to resolve my Resolve.
--------

Hey folks,
I've installed Resolve 17 (17.3.2 Build 8) on a freshly built PC but it keeps randomly crashing during editing. There's no specific action or set of actions that lead to it; it'll sometimes crash while just idle. My computer is a freshly built gaming PC with kinda good specs, so this behaviour is highly unsettling:

- AMD Ryzen 5600x, 6 cores
- NVIDIA RTX 3060
- 16 GB RAM
- 1 TB fixed HDD (this houses the project files and cache)
- 256 GB SSD
- Two monitors: A 1920x1080 (primary) and a 1366x768. Crashes occur in both single and dual monitor layouts.

The frequency of the crashes is usually around 10-15 minutes mark after program launch.

Can u try with only the 1920 res monitor and see if that makes a difference?

Earlier, I was only using the 1920, and it still used to crash.
But I didn't compare the frequency of crashes with and without the 1366 one. Lemme evaluate that.

Also, I was using .mkv files (made into proxy media) earlier and thought that might be related to the issue. But switching over to .mp4 didn't change anything.

Is there anything discernible from the logs?

Tried using just the 1920 monitor, crashed a minute later while importing and deleting stuff.

Can anyone help me here? It's really hitting my productivity. I like Resolve and have got a lot of work done, so I really want to fix this! Otherwise, I'll have to shift to something else :(

In case it helps anyone, here's how I managed to get my Resolve to reduce crashing. Based on googling and some help from this reddit post.

Major tweaks

1. Convert footage from .mp4 etc to .mov with DNxHD or DNxHR (
)
This gave out huge files (20GB for ~13 mins clip) (Explanation)
I didn't need Resolve's optimized media or proxy media anymore, so I turned them off.

2. Max out the memory configuration (Preferences > System > Memory and GPU > Memory Configuration)
According to Resolve docs, I didn't have the minimum required RAM while using Fusion. So I maxed out the limits to get the best possible use.

3. GPU set to NVIDIA and CUDA. (Preferences > System > Memory and GPU > GPU Configuration)
For AMD GPUs, please look up the optimal settings for Resolve.

4. Timeline Proxy Mode to Quarter Resolution. (Playback > Timeline Proxy Mode)
And switching to full resolution when I need, then back to quarter.

5. Limit Fusion nodes or split them across multiple fusion compositions.
This is to avoid GPU memory full errors (and subsequent crash) when using too many nodes in one fusion comp.

Minor tweaks

1. Limit RAM-eating open applications
When using Resolve, I keep other RAM-eating applications closed. Like browser or Steam or whatever. (Can find these apps by inspecting the Task Manager on windows). If I need to google something, I make sure to close the browser when I'm done.

2. Generally keep an eye on the RAM and GPU memory usage while using Resolve
And stop doing what you're doing when they start hitting the ceiling.

3. Use Render caches only when needed
Turn them on, then turn them back off.

4. Using Fusion smartly
That means using static images when you can, or using pre-rendered effect videos, instead of creating them all inside Fusion. The gentler you are on Fusion, the gentler it'll be on your PC.
