change project thumbnail?

PostTue Feb 13, 2018 1:35 am

don't seem to be able to find how to do it. some of my recent projects* have resorted to showing a picture of the young lady from the presets.

Is there still no answer to this? I'm most curious as well.
Resolve seems to grab just any random image from the Media Pool, and throws it up as the Project thumbnail in the Project Mgr. Silly.
Would be nice to select or create custom. You come to the Project Mgr and you quickly SEE which Project you desire to open.
I used to use Lightworks (out of UK), and it simply captured the very last frame you left at project close, and uses that as the new Project thumbnail. At least you could influence it.
I would really like to know if there's a way to select or create.
Anyone?

Okay, this is a clumsy workaround, but if you set the poster frame for each of the clips in the media pool for your project, it looks like it will at least choose one of those. I tried this just now and it eliminated the image of the "young lady from the presets" mentioned in the original post, replacing it with the poster frame I chose for that clip.

If you have hundreds of clips in your media pool, this isn't worth it.

To set the poster frame, click on a clip in the media pool, scrub until you find the image you want for your thumbnail, right-click, and select "set poster frame."

I agree that you should be able to do the same thing in the Project Manager, but you can't, at least as far as I can tell.

As someone who mainly edits vlogs and other talking head videos in Resolve, it's actually surprisingly embarrassing and discouraging to see only randomly selected thumbnails, because they always seem to be of not-so-great facial expressions (eyes closed, mouth open, silly looks). I know this is incredibly superficial, but whenever I have a client over, to whom I'm presenting a project, all those funny faces pop up, and I quickly want to move to the project ASAP, just to hide the ugly thumbnails. A workaround is to switch to the list view, but it's slower than the visual approach. Having the ability to choose a custom project thumbnail would give the ability to present even the unfinished projects in a more professional way.

It is possible, but is little bit annoying.
You can set your thumbnail on each clip in Media Pool. After this, those thumbnails are available for choose in Project manager. You can change project thumbnail by moving cursor over existing thumbnail, choose which are suitable for you and move your cursor up or down. Close project manager and If you will next time open Project manager again your project will be represent by chosen thumbnail.

here is just short demonstration:

I'm glad that it's possible, but this is a weird workflow.

Nothing seems to work for me in Resolve 16. My Thumbnails right now don't represet the video at all and are kinda confusing. Is there a way to permanently update those?

I can scrub through the thumbnails with my mouse. But when I restart the project manager the thumbnails reset again.

another vote for being able to set your poster-frame for projects by means of a right-click menu option, just like in the media pool for individual clips...pretty please :)

I did a search for project+thumbnail in that forum topic and came up empty...does that mean that nobody has started a topic about this feature yet, or that I didn't do my search correctly?

I don't want to start a new topic if it has already been addressed there, so can someone please linkt o that topic or let me know that it hasn't yet been created?

I did a video of how to set your thumbnails for your project. It was from awhile ago but I think it still works.

It's pretty ridiculous that 5 years on this simple, seemingly trivial request has yet to be fixed in Resolve. Why can't BMD give us a simple right-click Set Poster Frame in the project window? Even if you had to do continue with the Update option, at least let us choose a single frame to be the STATIC poster frame shown in the project window. Come on...

Oh my gosh, I can't believe there's no option to just choose the thumbnail you want for your project!! The randomly selected stills of goofy looks on people's faces are terrible! And the workflow of deleting ALL your media and then re-importing it is insane when you're working on a feature with thousands of clips from many cameras sorted into hundreds of bins.

Come on, this is pretty basic... make it happen Resolve!

Yeah, not only that, but to add insult to injury, in a project where your "video" is still images on the timeline, the options for thumbnail images for the project don't even scale correctly, so the image is totally wrong, and often not even recognizable, depending on the size of your images. It also doesn't include any titles that you might have put on top of those images.

Why can't BMD just let us search through the TIMELINE and choose a particular frame. You know, kind of like YouTube, Vimeo, and (probably) every other video editing program does? Maybe let us manually Grab a Still and designate it as the thumbnail.

I've just come back to Resolve after a hiatus, after watching BMD blow everybody else out of the water in terms of speed of advancement and innovation (in Resolve). But it seems, now in v18, that has slowed down quite a bit? Is my impression wrong? Have they cooled off on Resolve?
